About 1745 Stephen Bates was born in New York and he married in 1769. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had a son, Stephen Bates, who was baptized according to Rumbout Presbyterian Church records in Duchess County, New York in 1772. This Stephen Bates married Elizabeth Renne in 1802. Their son,Stephen Lyman Bates, was born in 1807 in Owego,NY and died in the Rockford, Illinois area in 1860.His son Levi Decatur Bates was born in 1836 in Owego,NY. His son Mark General Bates was born in 1886 in Long Pine,Nebraska. My father, Edward M. Bates was born in 1920 in Washington State. my paternal grandmother, Ollie Deweese, had family in Wa, Ne, Kentucky, and Pa after leaving Holland. My mothers maiden name was Kiichle and her grandparents immigrated from Germany to Ohio, Wisconsin, Idaho and Washington. Most of her relatives may have gone to Canada. My maternal grandmothers family were the Claytons who were from Wa, Missouri, and Maryland. My wifes maiden name is May and her relatives come from the Spokane, Washington area. Her maternal grandparents had the last name of Marks and Fleenor and lived in Spokane also. We are also looking at the Strand families of Oregon and Wisconsin as they are related through marriage as are the Smack family of Philadelphia and New Jersey. Other related families through marriage are the Ruby's of Iowa and Illinois and Knotts of Oregon. |

Our oldest known ancestor was Desiderio de Arriola who was born about 1675, possibly in Monterrey, Mexico. The old spanish records say he was spanish, and at this time, it's unknown if he was born in Monterrey or Spain, or somewhere in between. His son was Joseph Manuel de Arriola, born in Monterrey, Mexico about 1700. His son, Joseph Marcelino de Arriola arrived in Bexar, Texas about 1750, and was probably a spanish soldier. He was killed by indians in 1788. His wife and children are found in Nacogdoches, Texas about that time, and it's thought that Marcelino had been traveling between Nacogdoches and Bexar at the time he was killed. Marcelino's son, Antonio Arriola bought his brother and sister's share of the Arriola Rancho, on the outskirts of Nacogdoches, after the death of their mother Juana Maria Palacios Arriola. Antonio's son, Eduardo Arriola, obtained several spanish land grants. He and four of his sons fought in the Texas Revolution and he settled on one of his land grants, which consisted of one league of land, in present day Madison County, Texas. Eduardo had a large family that grew up and was raised in the Madison County area. Gregorio (Gray) Ariola was one of the first early day Texas Rangers. He was also in the Mexican War, the New Mexico War, was stationed at Fort Lincoln in Medina County and Fort Inge in Uvalde County, Texas and also the Civil War.
