The Beatys and Littles of Ireland and India
BEATY I am researching the BEATY family, originally from Ireland. From family folklore Francis BEATY was born in Tullamore, Ireland in 1757 . Francis and his wife Catherine gave birth to three sons, John, Francis and Henry, probably in Stoke Damerel, Devon, while he served in the Royal Navy. In 1820 Francis and 1821 Henry, joined the Honourable East India Company Army as Cadets in Bengal, India. The elder son of Francis, named Francis Henry BEATY, and his wife Caroline Ophelia (n?e Sheels), had fifteen children all born in India. Five of the sons served in the Indian Police. The Beaty family finally left India in 1948. The cities in India and Pakistan that feature in the family history are Lahore, Jhansie, Karachi, Landour, Mussoorie, Quetta, Rawlpindi and Simla. LITTLE/LYTTLE I am also researching the LITTLE/LYTTLE family from Northern Ireland. In 1839 Andrew LITTLE was born in the Parish of Montiaghs, Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, to Thomas and Mary (n?e Wilson) LITTLE. In 1858 he joined the 27th Inniskilling Regiment and sailed to India. He remained in India and retired from the army in 1894. He died in Dehra Dun, India in 1926. He had five children Mary Anne, Thomas Wilson, William John (my grandfather) Edward and Andrew. The surname spelling changed to LYTTLE with the children. The cities in India/Pakistan that feature in the family history are Dehra Dun, Jhansie, Karachi,Lahore, Meerut, North West Province,Peshawar and Simla. Descendants of Nathaniel Harriman (Herriman) Ontario, Canada
Nathaniel Harriman was either born in Hadley, MA or Norwich, CT in 1758. He married Bethania Snow in Hardwick, MA in 1781 and they had 9 children. We believe him to be the son of Nathaniel Harriman b. Oct 9, 1723,the brother of Jonathan b. 1753, the grandson of Matthew Harriman born August 16, 1652 and the great grandson of Leonard Harriman. Nathaniel received a land grant of 200 acres near the town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario (then called Hamilton in Upper Canada) on September 1, 1797. He may have been referred to as a Simcoe Loyalist. We have recently added information on his brother, Jonathan who moved from Vermont to Sandy Creek, NY. Diadamia was the youngest daughter of Nathaniel and Bethania. She was reported to be stolen from the lake shore near Cobourg, Ontario by Mississauga Indians on June 7, 1797 just 4 weeks after the family arrived from Rupert, Vermont. A poem written by Bethania entitled The Lost Child was meant to tell her parents, Jesse and Mary Snow,(nee Eaton)in Hardwick, MA, about the loss of Diadamia. Nathaniel, his second son, is the direct line ascendant to the author. He was a well respected person and served in the Provincial Dragoons during the war of 1812 -1815. His younger brother, Luther, was also in the Canadian Militia during that war. Luther then became a physician and was married twice; the first to Sarah White (5 children) (Sarah may have died as a result of childbirth complications) and the second to Abigail Dean. That marriage produced 7 children. Two sons, Weston Leroy and Elbridge also became physicians. After serving on the Union side during the Civil War, as surgeons, they both returned to establish practices in Lindsay, Ontario. Elbridge then moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota some time after 1879. The Harriman History (Feudalism to Freedom)by Lois Ware Thurston, comments on the Harriman Name. The name Harriman was not uncommon in England, suggesting there was no one Harriman family, but several unrelated families with the same name. Some of the earliest Harriman records were found in Uldale and it was only in these records that another Harriman with the Christian name Leonard was found. Uldale is in Cumberland County (the Lake District) in Northern England near the Scottish border (and recent center of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease) There are variant spellings of Harriman, Herriman, Harryman, Herryman, as in those days people often spelt a name the way it sounded. Charles W. Bardsley, author of ?A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames?, claims the name Harryman is an occupational name meaning servant of Henry which when spoken sounds like Harry?. When the Harriman?s left Uldale it was likely to find a better way of life, rather than religious freedom. Leonard and John Harriman found themselves caught up in the Great Migration of the 1630's. and arrived with Reverend E Rogers in New England in 1638. They set out from Rawley, Yorkshire, England. The Bannister Family Home Page
Some of the more well known members of our extended family include the writer Ernest Hemingway, and former Presidents Richard Nixon and Calvin Coolidge. Some of the first settlers in Vermont and several Revolutionary War soldiers are also found in our family tree, including Daniel and Asa Hemenway, Col. Ephraim Doolittle, and Timothy and Jason Banister. Several of the Banisters were drummers or fifers in the Continental Army. Col. Doolittle was primarily responsible for obtaining the charter for Shoreham, Vermont in 1762 from New Hampshire Gov. Wentworth. He was also an original proprietor of Bridport, Vt along with Daniel Hemenway, and issued the first deed of land in Bridport. Col Doolittle was at the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point with General Jefferey Amherst during the French and Indian War. He also commanded a regiment of minute men during the American Revolution. Several of our relatives also fought in the Union Army during the Civil War; many in the Lee family, as well as Lt. Henry B. Needham of Middlebury, Vermont, who was wounded in battle and died a few days later in Washington D.C. Early settlers in Vergennes, Vermont include ancestors Joseph Yattaw, Prosper LeBeau and Joseph January. There are many decendents of these individuals living in Vergennes and surrounding areas. These families originated in Quebec. We have traced the Brown line of our tree back to the 1300s in England, and the Smith line to the 1500's in England. We have the Banister and Hemenway lines traced to the 1600's, to Massachussetts and England. Our line of Lee's is traced to the late 1700's in the Pittsford and Castelton, Vermont areas. This family was headed by Ashbel Lee and his father who we think is William or Daniel Lee. Ashbel is buried in West Rutland Vermont with a flag on his grave. He was also likely a Revolutionary War Veteren. He died in 1836. The Needhams were in the Shrewsbury, Vermont area in the late 1700's and Levi Needhan then moved to East Middlebury to become one of the first store owners in that town. The Chapmans were also in Middlebury in the early 1800's with William Chapman as the head of my family line. Joseph LeBeau moved to Vergennes in the late 1700's or early 1800's (before 1810) and his son Prosper has many decendents. This family was from the East Berkshire, Vermont area, and likely from Quebec before that. The Yattaw name is most often cited as French Canadian with possibly some Native American influence. Paul and William Yattaw were brothers living in the Vergennes ares in the early 1800's and had many children. William later moved to the Saratoga, NY area. They have many decendents in the Vergennes, Vermont area. Our Smith family comes from Worecester, Ma. where John Smith married Sarah Doolittle, daughter of Col. Ehpraim Doolittle. These families moved to Shoreham, Vermont and settled on the Doolittle farm, located along the Crown Point Military Road This was the first settlement in Shoreham, Vermont. The Smiths, Doolittles and other families such as the Hemenways, lived in a communal setting on the Doolittle farm, sharing all food and chores, and owning everything in common. These families then proceeded to charter both the town of Shoreham and the town of Bridport in 1762, along with other families that had subsequently moved to the area. These were amoung the first towns chartered in the State of Vermont.
