Origin: There are several ideas or ways in which the name Marcum came into being. Here are a few of the ideas that I have found: 1. According to Don Marcum, he was told by his 90 year old uncle. We were Markhams long ago. James Marcum, Secretary to John Rolfe of Pocahonest was the first Marcum to come to America. This Marcum was in the settlement of James Town, VA (1607) led by Captain John Smith. This was before the May Flower compact (1621). The Marcum became business men and farmers of Virginia. Wilson, sr. family took its name from its land of Markham in Nottingham. Alexander de Markham (Alexander of Markham) was constable of the Castle of Nottingham in the reign of Henry III. From him descended Sir John Markham, Knight Judge of the Common Pleas in the Reigns of Richard II. Henry IV (1396-1407). 2. I have also found that both Marcum and Markham are from the Marcums of Wayne Co, KY. The name was Markham before the County clerks started spelling it phonetically.

Origin of marcum, Meaning of marcum
Origin: This is not what I have been told, Bill. Their are several Marcum families, mostly of Cherokee origin, but often not related. For example, there are the Flathead Marcums, the Skillet Marcums, etc. To find their records, one would not go to KY as you indicated, but to Logan, WV. The name has always been spelled Marcum there and unless you've uncovered an unrelated European set of Marcums, then you are incorrect. I have many old pictures and their Native ancestry is quite obvious. My great grandfather, Charles Marcum, lived from 1888 to 1970 and I remember him well. He was a very religious man (as was his father, Randolph) and he stated many times to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and others that he was defintely of Cherokee derivation. He was not a lying man. His father, Randolph Marcum, was born in Wilsondale, Wayne County, WV in 1856. Beverly McClanahan
