The Beatys and Littles of Ireland and India
BEATY I am researching the BEATY family, originally from Ireland. From family folklore Francis BEATY was born in Tullamore, Ireland in 1757 . Francis and his wife Catherine gave birth to three sons, John, Francis and Henry, probably in Stoke Damerel, Devon, while he served in the Royal Navy. In 1820 Francis and 1821 Henry, joined the Honourable East India Company Army as Cadets in Bengal, India. The elder son of Francis, named Francis Henry BEATY, and his wife Caroline Ophelia (n?e Sheels), had fifteen children all born in India. Five of the sons served in the Indian Police. The Beaty family finally left India in 1948. The cities in India and Pakistan that feature in the family history are Lahore, Jhansie, Karachi, Landour, Mussoorie, Quetta, Rawlpindi and Simla. LITTLE/LYTTLE I am also researching the LITTLE/LYTTLE family from Northern Ireland. In 1839 Andrew LITTLE was born in the Parish of Montiaghs, Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, to Thomas and Mary (n?e Wilson) LITTLE. In 1858 he joined the 27th Inniskilling Regiment and sailed to India. He remained in India and retired from the army in 1894. He died in Dehra Dun, India in 1926. He had five children Mary Anne, Thomas Wilson, William John (my grandfather) Edward and Andrew. The surname spelling changed to LYTTLE with the children. The cities in India/Pakistan that feature in the family history are Dehra Dun, Jhansie, Karachi,Lahore, Meerut, North West Province,Peshawar and Simla. Some of the more well known members of our extended family include the writer Ernest Hemingway, and former Presidents Richard Nixon and Calvin Coolidge. Some of the first settlers in Vermont and several Revolutionary War soldiers are also found in our family tree, including Daniel and Asa Hemenway, Col. Ephraim Doolittle, and Timothy and Jason Banister. Several of the Banisters were drummers or fifers in the Continental Army. Col. Doolittle was primarily responsible for obtaining the charter for Shoreham, Vermont in 1762 from New Hampshire Gov. Wentworth. He was also an original proprietor of Bridport, Vt along with Daniel Hemenway, and issued the first deed of land in Bridport. Col Doolittle was at the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point with General Jefferey Amherst during the French and Indian War. He also commanded a regiment of minute men during the American Revolution. Several of our relatives also fought in the Union Army during the Civil War; many in the Lee family, as well as Lt. Henry B. Needham of Middlebury, Vermont, who was wounded in battle and died a few days later in Washington D.C. Early settlers in Vergennes, Vermont include ancestors Joseph Yattaw, Prosper LeBeau and Joseph January. There are many decendents of these individuals living in Vergennes and surrounding areas. These families originated in Quebec. We have traced the Brown line of our tree back to the 1300s in England, and the Smith line to the 1500's in England. We have the Banister and Hemenway lines traced to the 1600's, to Massachussetts and England. Our line of Lee's is traced to the late 1700's in the Pittsford and Castelton, Vermont areas. This family was headed by Ashbel Lee and his father who we think is William or Daniel Lee. Ashbel is buried in West Rutland Vermont with a flag on his grave. He was also likely a Revolutionary War Veteren. He died in 1836. The Needhams were in the Shrewsbury, Vermont area in the late 1700's and Levi Needhan then moved to East Middlebury to become one of the first store owners in that town. The Chapmans were also in Middlebury in the early 1800's with William Chapman as the head of my family line. Joseph LeBeau moved to Vergennes in the late 1700's or early 1800's (before 1810) and his son Prosper has many decendents. This family was from the East Berkshire, Vermont area, and likely from Quebec before that. The Yattaw name is most often cited as French Canadian with possibly some Native American influence. Paul and William Yattaw were brothers living in the Vergennes ares in the early 1800's and had many children. William later moved to the Saratoga, NY area. They have many decendents in the Vergennes, Vermont area. Our Smith family comes from Worecester, Ma. where John Smith married Sarah Doolittle, daughter of Col. Ehpraim Doolittle. These families moved to Shoreham, Vermont and settled on the Doolittle farm, located along the Crown Point Military Road This was the first settlement in Shoreham, Vermont. The Smiths, Doolittles and other families such as the Hemenways, lived in a communal setting on the Doolittle farm, sharing all food and chores, and owning everything in common. These families then proceeded to charter both the town of Shoreham and the town of Bridport in 1762, along with other families that had subsequently moved to the area. These were amoung the first towns chartered in the State of Vermont. The Carmichaels of Minnesota
The Carmichaels of Minnesota: Surname List Our David is the second youngest son of David CARMICHAEL and Margaret [McLEAN] CARMICHAEL of Elmsville (aka: St. Patrick's Parrish, Digdeguash) of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada. David's grandparents are: Parental - Dugald CARMICHAEL and Jannet [CRAIG] CARMICHAEL Maternal - Murdoch McLEAN and Susannah [DODWELL] McLEAN. David left New Brunswick to emigrate to the St. Croix Valley area of Minnesota, USA sometime during the early 1850s - just following the death of his father. His mother would soon remarry and move from New Brunswick to the state of Maine and many of his siblings were married and starting families. The Minnesota Territory had become well known as place to be for greater opportunity and prosperity then any of the other territories. Minnesota had built a tremendous excitement to those who want the American Dream. David's travels to Minnesota are still speculation, but we believe his younger brother, Daniel, followed him. David's Minnesota venture may have been initailized through plans of his Minnesota bound McLEAN cousins who have been identified through various Minnesota census records having settled in Anoka and Washington Counties. Following David's arrival in Minnesota, he soon became a major contributor to the growing lumber industry in the Washington and St. Croix County areas around the communities of Bayport and Stillwater, Minnesota and also that of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. David married Rebecca Harmon COX, daughter of Melinda [HADLEY] COX and Joseph COX of Indiana. Rebecca's mother was widowed very young and had been very well provided for, as a widow. At this time, we do not know what had motivated Melinda [HADLEY] COX to leave Indiana with her two small children which brought her to the Stillwater area, but once she arrived she became the owner of a thriving mill located in nearby Bayport. Melinda [HADLEY] COX re-married to a man named A. ? SECREST who was widowed as well and had two daughters of his own. Melinda died 12 years later, leaving Rebecca to care for her step-father, two half sisters and brother; and left her wealth to her husband. It is believed that SECREST made arrangements with one of his largest and loyal logging customer's, (you guessed it! - David CARMICHAEL), for Rebecca's hand in marriage, who was then 15 years of age. But! The Civil War would soon erupt and David would be one of the very first enlisting volunteers and was soon off to defend liberty and freedom as he understood it to be. David's grandfather, Dugald CARMICHAEL had been a Revolutionary War British soldier nearly 70 years prior, so with that memory, David went to battle fearlessly; proud to be the first of his lineage to fight and defend freedom. Yes, David's grandfather fought as a Loyalist for His Majesty's Umpirical Army during the American Revolutionary War, but only by persuasion not by intent; as his grandfather's only intent upon arriving in the New World, was to find wealth (for his family at home in Scotland) but soon after his arrival he was taunted (as many were) to join the British cause. Many recruits were told of only a short duration being involved and were promised land in the New World in exchange for their loyalties - of course, the land could only be given IF the Brits won the War and we all know how that turned out!
