Origin of hope, Meaning of hope
Origin: The surname apparently originated as Phawhope or Fawhope, in The Borders area of southern Scotland very early. It sometimes appears as Fop in the US, but this probably relates to the literacy of times. Adam de Fawhope was a juror on the inquisition pertaining to the rights of Robert de Bruce, Earl of Carrick (Black, George F. 1962 The Surnames of Scotland: Their Origin, Meaning and History. New York Public Library. New York, pp 659-660.)
