Surnames: Hayes Submitted by: Beth Origin of hayes, Meaning of hayes Origin: This surname is not common in England, though at first it may appear to have an Anglo-Saxon or Norman English origin and meaning. In the cases where it occurs in England it is said by one authority to be possibly derived from the name of a parish in Kent and Middlesex counties, called Hayes. The name is a well known one in Scotland and Ireland in the form of Hay, Hays, and more usually Hayes. In these cases it has a well known Gaelic origin, being an anglicised form of O'h-Aodha or 'Hea, which was the appelation born by the chiefs of Muscry-Luachra. The arms of this ancient Milesian family are thus heraldically described: A dexter arm lying fesseways, couped below the elbow, vested gules, turned up of the first, grasping in the hand a sword in pale entwined with a serpent descending all proper. The ancient chiefs of Muscry-Luachra derived their name and descent from Aodha (or Hugh), grandson of Cas, who is number ninety-one on the pedigree of the Kings of Thomond. Their territory lay in the barony of Coshlea, whence a branch of the sept or clan removed into Carbery, where they became possessed of the lands called Pobble-O'h-Aodha.
