Origin: According to my Father, who was the great-great-great grandson of Col. Joseph Hardin, the name Hardin originated in France. There were 3 brothers who escaped France because of religious persecution. One settled in the New England states, one in the Southern states and the third went to Canada. Joseph Hardin was born near Richmond, Virginia 18 April 1734 and died 4 July 1801 in Lenoir, Tennessee. I think the original spelling was Hardioun.

Origin of hardin, Meaning of hardin
Origin: The name Hardin was originally French and spelled Hardouin. This is documented in early records throughout New York, where the early Hardouins immigrated to. I descend from Marc Hardouin, who came to New York in 1660 because of religious persecution in France.
As I understand it, Hardouin was (is?) a local name, for those of the family of the Count of Hardouin, a French nobleman.
