Origin: The orgin of this Surname is a variant spelling of the word Holy Day. This was the war cry of the Annandale Warriors of Scotland in the Strathclyde Briton area. The name means Holy Day or Festival. It was given to a child born on a festival, thus it was called the Holy Day child. Or the many different spellings of the name applied like that of the 15th century, hallidaye. No matter how you spell it, it still means Holy Day.

Origin: HALLAM - English
Pronounced: HAL-am
MEANING: From a surname which was derived from a place name meaning either "at the rocks" or "at the nook"
or "dweller at the rocks" in Old English.

ORIGIN:The origin of the HALLAM name is very hard to ascertain. Numerous people have investigated the origin, of which I am indebted to (Robert Hallam & Desmond Holden).
There is a school of thought that there may be two origins, one from the villages on the outskirts of Ilkeston in Derbyshire and the other from the Yorkshire Sheffield area. There is a possible third - HALAM, northeast of Nottingham, though this is remote.

Origin: Hallchurch or Allchurch originally a family from Alvechurch in North Worcestershire, England. Early records spell the name de Alvechurch but as Alvechurch is pronounced locally as Allchurch the name became Allchurch or Alchurch. The H was added to one family in c1820 probably a mistake by a registrar.

Origin: Hall - I believe that Hall is much older than the "name of someone that hangs around the hall of a castle or estate". But rather the old Europeon culture which was the Salt trade of Gealic/celtic for which Hall is the name for salt. For example, Hallstatt, Austria.
