Daniel J. Kane
Description: Read recently that Whitehead is the 529th most common surname in the United States. Although I am a few generations removed from the surname, I am very interested in finding any or all of my Whitehead-descended cousins. I'm assuming there are thousands of you out there who are descended from William and Elizabeth Whitehead. (Not sure of Elizabeth's maiden name, but it could be Culver or Whitehead.) This couple, both of whom were born in 1800 in England (Yorkshire?, Warwickshire?), emigrated to Somerset County, NJ just before 1820. They were still there as late as 1837, but moved a few counties west in the late 1830s, to Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, PA. Stayed there until late 1850s, when they moved on, with 5 of their 9 children, to Rock County, WI. When William died there in 1868, his widow Elizabeth moved back east to Conshohocken, Montgomery County, PA, and lived there another 20 years, dying in 1888. Are any of you descended from the following 9 children of William and Elizabeth Whitehead? Abraham, b. 1820 in NJ, married Harriett DeHaven of Montgomery Co., PA. William (my ancestor), b. 1822 in CT, married Mary Ann Manley of Philadelphia. John, b. 1820 in Byfield, MA, married Sarah B. Colflesh of Montgomery Co, PA Jane Elizabeth, b. 1828 in NJ, married Charles G. Davis of Conshocken, PA Ralph, b. 1831 in NJ, married Martha Lough of Jersey Co., IL, settled in Rock County, WI. Tunis, b. 1833 in NJ, married Alice Irene Hudson, settled in Rock County, WI Anna Maria, b. 1835 in NJ, married Jacob Knezel of Montgomery Co., PA (a Civil War casualty), settled in Rock and Green Counties, WI. James, b. 1838 in PA, married Mary Frances Barnum of Rock Co., WI Mary Ann, b. 1843 in PA, married James Henry Graves of Chenango Co., NY (a Civil War casualty). With 2 of the couple's first three children (William and John) being born in New England, there is reason to believe they had family, perhaps earlier settlers in Connecticut or Massachusetts.
