Dora had a young child Willie(Willa?)-Mae from a former marriage(?), my grandmother. She was wed(?) to a black named Fred Lockett. Was said to be white, may have been native--was listed in two different census once as mulatto another as colored. She died young and her child was shipped north to Locketts relatives & placed under bondage as a white servant, she escaped. Inquiries of Blacks in area were met with silence or evasion. Intriging...I am trying to trace her back to late 1700's to 1800's

Census information indicates she was born in 1886 or 1887. Her childrens birth certificates indicate she was born in Illinois. A 1900 census from Butler County has her listed as Uliss Vowels? Perhaps a transcription error?

William Pitts is listed on the maryland census c.1910 as coloured altinate race which usually means native american.
he wal married to Mela who is also listed in the same way on the mayrland census 1920 .
My family was told that William pitts was not originally from Maryland but we don't know where he originally came from .
We were also told that one of their children my grandmother Quinnie pitts was part Cherokee and part Blackfoot .
