The Smith-Kitely/Kiteley Family
the Smiths were of English/Scotch or Irish ancestry and came to the new world at an early date. Samuel Smith was b. ca 1739-43 possibly in/near Baltimore, MD. He m. Hannah Jane Kitely/Kiteley about 1769. We think she may have been the dau of Francis and Mary/Martha (Thomas) Kiteley of Baltimore Co, MD. If Hannah proves to be their dau, her birth year was 1748 and siblings were John Thomas, Mary, Francis and possibly William Kiteley. It is probable that Samuel Smith and his family were listed on the 1790 census in Montgomery Co, MD. About 1792 Samuel and Hannah moved to Rowan Co, NC where they bought land in the northeast quadrant of what later became Davie Co, NC. A Bible record dated 1779 denotes the birthdates of nine children: 1. Jane Smith b. 1770 in MD. She m. a BEEDING ca 1790 in MD? They had issue and Jane died in Davie Co, NC in 1854. 2. John Smith b. 1774 in MD. He m. in 1797 in Surry Co, NC to Elizabeth SPEER, dau of Benjamin and Ruth (Steelman) Speer. John's family went to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805 and they later moved down to Overton Co, TN where John d. in 1855. Their children resided Cumberland Co, KY. 3. William Smith b. 1777 in MD. He m. in 1800 in Surry Co, NC to Nancy SPEER, another dau of Benjamin and Ruth (Steelman) Speer. William and his family also moved to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805. We can't locate them after he sold his land in Overton Co, TN in 1826. We have a death date of 1851 for William, but we have no information about his children or where he died. 4. Samuel Smith b. 1779 MD. He m. in 1797 in Rowan Co, NC to Jane Dorothea Dolly GATES, dau of Edward and Esther Gates. Samuel d. in 1839 in Davie Co where they raised their family. 5. James Smith b. 1782 in MD. He m. ca 1801 Rowan Co? NC to Mary Elizabeth JOB, dau of Samuel and Rachel (Little) Job. James' family also moved to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805 where they resided on Kettle Creek until about 1820 when they went to Union/Wayne Co, IN. In 1829 they moved to Morgan Co, IL until 1845 when they moved to neighboring Cass Co, IL. Again in 1854 they moved to Madison Co, IA, and this is where they d. in 1855. 6. Thomas Smith b. 1784 in MD. He m. 1813 Rowan Co, NC to Elizabeth ETCHISON, dau of William or Edmund Etchison. They had a family in Davie Co where Thomas d. in 1858. 7. Levi Kiteley Smith b. 1786 in MD. He m. 1809 in Rowan Co, NC to Martha Patsy HOLDEN. They had children and resided in Davie Co where Levi d. in 1840. 8. Sarah Smith b. 1789 in MD. She m/1 to Peter EATON in 1814 in Surry Co, NC. Peter died & Sarah m/2 to William P STOCKTON in 1818 in Surry Co, NC. Sarah d. in 1819 at the birth of her son William Smith Stockton who also died the same day. They are buried in Davie Co. 9. Perry Smith b. 1792 in MD? or NC? He m. in 1815 in Rowan Co, NC to Mary Polly ETCHISON, dau of Edmund Etchison. They went to Lawrence Co, IN where they had a family and where they resided in Spice Valley Twp. Perry d. in 1841 in Lawrence Co, IN. The Smiths were members of the Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church in Davie Co and many members of this family are buried in the church cemetery. Several in the family were Methodist ministers, as were many in the later generations across the country. |

The Bannister Family Home Page
Some of the more well known members of our extended family include the writer Ernest Hemingway, and former Presidents Richard Nixon and Calvin Coolidge. Some of the first settlers in Vermont and several Revolutionary War soldiers are also found in our family tree, including Daniel and Asa Hemenway, Col. Ephraim Doolittle, and Timothy and Jason Banister. Several of the Banisters were drummers or fifers in the Continental Army. Col. Doolittle was primarily responsible for obtaining the charter for Shoreham, Vermont in 1762 from New Hampshire Gov. Wentworth. He was also an original proprietor of Bridport, Vt along with Daniel Hemenway, and issued the first deed of land in Bridport. Col Doolittle was at the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point with General Jefferey Amherst during the French and Indian War. He also commanded a regiment of minute men during the American Revolution. Several of our relatives also fought in the Union Army during the Civil War; many in the Lee family, as well as Lt. Henry B. Needham of Middlebury, Vermont, who was wounded in battle and died a few days later in Washington D.C. Early settlers in Vergennes, Vermont include ancestors Joseph Yattaw, Prosper LeBeau and Joseph January. There are many decendents of these individuals living in Vergennes and surrounding areas. These families originated in Quebec. We have traced the Brown line of our tree back to the 1300s in England, and the Smith line to the 1500's in England. We have the Banister and Hemenway lines traced to the 1600's, to Massachussetts and England. Our line of Lee's is traced to the late 1700's in the Pittsford and Castelton, Vermont areas. This family was headed by Ashbel Lee and his father who we think is William or Daniel Lee. Ashbel is buried in West Rutland Vermont with a flag on his grave. He was also likely a Revolutionary War Veteren. He died in 1836. The Needhams were in the Shrewsbury, Vermont area in the late 1700's and Levi Needhan then moved to East Middlebury to become one of the first store owners in that town. The Chapmans were also in Middlebury in the early 1800's with William Chapman as the head of my family line. Joseph LeBeau moved to Vergennes in the late 1700's or early 1800's (before 1810) and his son Prosper has many decendents. This family was from the East Berkshire, Vermont area, and likely from Quebec before that. The Yattaw name is most often cited as French Canadian with possibly some Native American influence. Paul and William Yattaw were brothers living in the Vergennes ares in the early 1800's and had many children. William later moved to the Saratoga, NY area. They have many decendents in the Vergennes, Vermont area. Our Smith family comes from Worecester, Ma. where John Smith married Sarah Doolittle, daughter of Col. Ehpraim Doolittle. These families moved to Shoreham, Vermont and settled on the Doolittle farm, located along the Crown Point Military Road This was the first settlement in Shoreham, Vermont. The Smiths, Doolittles and other families such as the Hemenways, lived in a communal setting on the Doolittle farm, sharing all food and chores, and owning everything in common. These families then proceeded to charter both the town of Shoreham and the town of Bridport in 1762, along with other families that had subsequently moved to the area. These were amoung the first towns chartered in the State of Vermont. The oldest ancestor I have now is Jan Born (father of Bartholomew BORNN from St. Thomas, VI) who was born on the island of Curacao. He emigrated to Saint Thomas sometime in the early 1800's. At the time he lived there, it was under Danish rule. He was a goldsmith. Bartholomew was a jeweler and an elder in the Dutch Reform Church. He had at least 16 children who reached maturity. Early in this century, some of his children settled in Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, Trinidad and New York City as well as St. Thomas. My mother's line is Italian and Slavic. From northern Italy and Trieste come RICHMAN and KERNITICH. From southern Italy (Calabria and Sicily) come the surnames of PENNA; SECECI;MARTINO and GALIMBO.
