Origin: THE HISTORY OF THE HAVERTY FAMILY
HAVERTY; O'HAVERTY; O'HAVERTA

"DESCENDANT OF ABHARTACH"

ABARTACH: ABHARTACH (av-art-ach) m. This name was in use among the Ui-Iffernain (Heffernans) of Dal Cais amongst others. In the Finn-tales Abartach is the father of the beloved of the warrior Cael. The name gaves birth to the modern surname O' Haverty.

This old Connacht name is now, and indeed always was rare. It is, however, fairly well represented in a smal area round the County Galway parishes of Kilmordaly and Craughwell. It is not often met with in the records. The Annals of Innisfallen mention O' hAbartaig, as Abbot of Mayo in 1095; William O'Haverta is included in a list of County Galway "pardons" in 1584; and one Dennis O' Haverta occurs in the Strafford Inquistion of Mayo in 1635. O' hAbhartaigh is the modern Irish form of the name.
