Origin of Mac

Origin of Mac, Meaning of Mac

Origin: The name was exported to England by the invading Saxons in 449 CE where it developed many new phonetic variations and was imported by the Norwegian Vikings to Norway when they raided England around 700 CE. These Norwegian Vikings later settled in the Contentin (western) region of Normandy, France around 933 CE where the name evolved from Asketill (10th century CE) to Anschetillus (11th century CE) to Anquetil (12th century CE) to Anctil (18th century CE). In 1734 CE, Jean Louis Anctil emigrated from Avranches, Normandy, France to Nouvelle France (Quebec, Canada) and established a family line, where the surname today is predominate. The Anctil family name can be found throughout the United Kingdom (former colonies included) and even most of the world today.

Origin: The MacLennans originated from a branch of the Logans of Galloway. The Logans in turn stem from a Thomas of Logan (c. 1150) who may have been related to the Princeses of Galloway and thus the Scottish royal line.

According to an account by Rev. John MacRae of Dingwall, in 1374 a group of Logans was defeated North of Inverness at Druimnaduer. His account elaberates on an earlier account contained in the Wardlaw Ms. (1674).

The leader of the Logans was named "Gillagorm." He had a son called Croitar who was educated at Beauly Abbey. This Croitar had a son whom he named Gillafinan in honor of a Saint Finan. His descendents became known as the MacLennans. This was during a period when the surname Logan was outlawed to be used.

Gillagorm's widow, Helen, inherited the small estate of Drumnamarig near Tore on the Black Isle.

That the Logans resided in the North of Scotland during the 14th Century is confirmed by the fact that a Robert Logan was the King's Bailey for Banff c. 1370.

The spelling Loban is a later varation of the name.

Origin: The surname MacKechnie is reputed to be derived from the French mispronunciation of the Gaelic for "Son of Hector", which is MacKeechan. It is reputed that when Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to France in 1746 after defeat at Culloden, he took with him a section of the MacDonald clan; to protect their anonymity these MacDonalds assumed the surname MacKeechan whilst in France, but during their stay the surname became corrupted into variations such as MacKechnie, MacKechran, MacKeegan, etc.

Origin: The MacQuillin Family.
I have seen history books which alleged that the MacQuillins were originally a Scottish clan, but did not advance any supporting evidence. On the other hand, several historians, e.g. Professor Edmund Curtis, have made a strong case for the name deriving from Hugh (not William) deMandeville. The original Gaelic spelling was MacUighilin i.e. son of Hugh and sometimes MacUidhilin i.e. son of Hud. Hud being a diminutive of Hugh.
Early English scribes recorded the name variously as MacHoulyn/MacUlin etc. which indicates a phonetic spelling of MacUighilin. There is no letter Q in the Irish language and this was probably added to "legitimise" the anglicised spelling of the name. As a result, the "MacWillin" pronunciation came into existence.
