The Atkinson McKinnon Home Page
InterneTree: Frederick Stuart Atkinson On the McKinnon, Stuart and Scottish Clans sides, the heritage of Mary Queen of Scott's and the Battle of Culloden Moor and have deeply affected our Scotch family history. Because of religious persecution, battles and wars, our Scotch ancestors ended up hastily leaving Scotland, from The Isle Of Skye, on the Ark and Dove and immigrated to Prince Edward Island. The Atkinson Family Tree ancestors emigrated from Europe (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, France and Germany, Italy, Switzerland). Others came from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania in particular. This is not unusual because the Maritime Provinces were a haven for those loyal to the British Crown and setters were promised substantial land grants from the British government to move to the Maritimes after the expulsion of the Acadians. It is interesting to note that our family also includes Iroquois and/or Micmac Native American women marrying at least two separate ancestors in the US and Nova Scotia. Another ancestor came to Duxbury MA area in the 1621, on the ship that came after the Mayflower called the Fortune. On the Atkinson side, my grandfathers 5th great grandfather Benjamin Allen left New England and fought in the French and Indian War on the British side in Nova Scotia. He was badly wounded losing a leg, was discharged and sent back to New England, settling and starting a family in Kingston, MA. He later went back to Halifax, NS and joined in the ill-fated Eddy Rebellion, and after the Eddy Rebellion failed, he became a wanted man. He eventually joined the Tories in Nova Scotia during the American Revolutionary War. He would have been hung as a traitor if he returned to his home and family in Kingston, MA. We are also descended from Col. Hezekiah King and Col. Benoni Danks who were infamous participants in the Eddy Rebellion. On the Atkinson side we are related to Presidents John Adams, Samuel Adams and William Howard Taft, Poets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Betty Ford and singer Ann Murray to name a few. THE ADGER STORY
The first Adger ancestor known at this time (2000) is James Adger. He was born in 1742 in County Antrim, Ireland and died in Dunean, County Antrim, Ireland, Province Ulster. James Adger was a linen manufacturer and had his mill and bleaching green in Dunean. He is buried in the Old Episcopal Church Yard in Dunean and the tombstone bears this inscription:\r\n'Here Lies The Body of\r\nJAMES ADGER\r\nWho Died March 25th, 1783\r\nAged 41 Years.'\r\nTo quote Ellison Moultrie Adger(1875-1945) 'My Great Grandfather's brother, James Adger ll,(1777-1858) said the Adger family were of French decent and Huguenot Refugees who went to Ireland and Scotland from France after the Edict of Nantes was set aside. He claimed that our ancestors fought at the battle of London-Derry in 1689.' Quoting from John Bailey Adger's(1810-1899)book, 'My Life and Times'\r\nThe Adger's seem to have gravitated to the southern part of America after immigrating and in particular South Carolina and Louisiana. The early American Adger Ancestors were very diversified in their interest. They were large land owners, Phoshphate mine owners, shipping and railway line developers and builders. The Adger Wharf still stands in Charleston, South Carolina. They,or branches of their treLucie Barton Adger |

A John Adams came to America in 1631 aboard the Fortune from England. The Mayflower being the first Ship to America and the Fortune being the second. During the next 30 years several other Adams's also sailed to America from England.\r\n\r\nBecause of the Civil War and the court houses being destroyed by fires all over the south, It is almost impossible to trace any of our family back earlier than the 1700's. But, We have been here longer than our Nation has been The United States of America.\r\n |

The Wilson's and Pierce's of Powell Valley, Tennessee
The Wilson family originally came from Smyth County, Virginia. Then in the 1850's moved to the Powell Valley area of Tennesse, in what was then the Speedwell/ Sharps Chapel area of Tennessee. The Pierce family records show that Pierce's have lived in the Union County/ Powell Valley area since the late 1700's, originally coming from North Carolina and Virginia. Many of the families that settled along the Powell Valley area were large, and extended families. They had endured hardships from the elements, from sickness, and had survived hunger, by sheer determination, and flourished, till forced to move because of the construction of the Norris Dam, which caused flooding of the homesteads that had taken generations of work to build and make prosperous. Throughout the records you will find married to the Wilson's and Pierce's other families that lived locally, like Braden, Asmus, Brantley, Boruff, Barton, Beeler, Smith, Williamson, Ellison, and so many of the 'First Families of the Valley'.I create this as a tribute to my mother Ruth Wilson Brantley Pierce, and my father , Henry Clay Pierce who loved their family, their mountains, their valley, and their memories of the people and the history of this little Tennessee community they held so dearBrenda Sue Adamson |
