The Smith-Kitely/Kiteley Family
the Smiths were of English/Scotch or Irish ancestry and came to the new world at an early date. Samuel Smith was b. ca 1739-43 possibly in/near Baltimore, MD. He m. Hannah Jane Kitely/Kiteley about 1769. We think she may have been the dau of Francis and Mary/Martha (Thomas) Kiteley of Baltimore Co, MD. If Hannah proves to be their dau, her birth year was 1748 and siblings were John Thomas, Mary, Francis and possibly William Kiteley. It is probable that Samuel Smith and his family were listed on the 1790 census in Montgomery Co, MD. About 1792 Samuel and Hannah moved to Rowan Co, NC where they bought land in the northeast quadrant of what later became Davie Co, NC. A Bible record dated 1779 denotes the birthdates of nine children: 1. Jane Smith b. 1770 in MD. She m. a BEEDING ca 1790 in MD? They had issue and Jane died in Davie Co, NC in 1854. 2. John Smith b. 1774 in MD. He m. in 1797 in Surry Co, NC to Elizabeth SPEER, dau of Benjamin and Ruth (Steelman) Speer. John's family went to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805 and they later moved down to Overton Co, TN where John d. in 1855. Their children resided Cumberland Co, KY. 3. William Smith b. 1777 in MD. He m. in 1800 in Surry Co, NC to Nancy SPEER, another dau of Benjamin and Ruth (Steelman) Speer. William and his family also moved to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805. We can't locate them after he sold his land in Overton Co, TN in 1826. We have a death date of 1851 for William, but we have no information about his children or where he died. 4. Samuel Smith b. 1779 MD. He m. in 1797 in Rowan Co, NC to Jane Dorothea Dolly GATES, dau of Edward and Esther Gates. Samuel d. in 1839 in Davie Co where they raised their family. 5. James Smith b. 1782 in MD. He m. ca 1801 Rowan Co? NC to Mary Elizabeth JOB, dau of Samuel and Rachel (Little) Job. James' family also moved to Cumberland Co, KY in 1805 where they resided on Kettle Creek until about 1820 when they went to Union/Wayne Co, IN. In 1829 they moved to Morgan Co, IL until 1845 when they moved to neighboring Cass Co, IL. Again in 1854 they moved to Madison Co, IA, and this is where they d. in 1855. 6. Thomas Smith b. 1784 in MD. He m. 1813 Rowan Co, NC to Elizabeth ETCHISON, dau of William or Edmund Etchison. They had a family in Davie Co where Thomas d. in 1858. 7. Levi Kiteley Smith b. 1786 in MD. He m. 1809 in Rowan Co, NC to Martha Patsy HOLDEN. They had children and resided in Davie Co where Levi d. in 1840. 8. Sarah Smith b. 1789 in MD. She m/1 to Peter EATON in 1814 in Surry Co, NC. Peter died & Sarah m/2 to William P STOCKTON in 1818 in Surry Co, NC. Sarah d. in 1819 at the birth of her son William Smith Stockton who also died the same day. They are buried in Davie Co. 9. Perry Smith b. 1792 in MD? or NC? He m. in 1815 in Rowan Co, NC to Mary Polly ETCHISON, dau of Edmund Etchison. They went to Lawrence Co, IN where they had a family and where they resided in Spice Valley Twp. Perry d. in 1841 in Lawrence Co, IN. The Smiths were members of the Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church in Davie Co and many members of this family are buried in the church cemetery. Descendants of Nathaniel Harriman (Herriman) Ontario, Canada
Nathaniel Harriman was either born in Hadley, MA or Norwich, CT in 1758. He married Bethania Snow in Hardwick, MA in 1781 and they had 9 children. We believe him to be the son of Nathaniel Harriman b. Oct 9, 1723,the brother of Jonathan b. 1753, the grandson of Matthew Harriman born August 16, 1652 and the great grandson of Leonard Harriman. Nathaniel received a land grant of 200 acres near the town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario (then called Hamilton in Upper Canada) on September 1, 1797. He may have been referred to as a Simcoe Loyalist. We have recently added information on his brother, Jonathan who moved from Vermont to Sandy Creek, NY. Diadamia was the youngest daughter of Nathaniel and Bethania. She was reported to be stolen from the lake shore near Cobourg, Ontario by Mississauga Indians on June 7, 1797 just 4 weeks after the family arrived from Rupert, Vermont. A poem written by Bethania entitled The Lost Child was meant to tell her parents, Jesse and Mary Snow,(nee Eaton)in Hardwick, MA, about the loss of Diadamia. Nathaniel, his second son, is the direct line ascendant to the author. He was a well respected person and served in the Provincial Dragoons during the war of 1812 -1815. His younger brother, Luther, was also in the Canadian Militia during that war. Luther then became a physician and was married twice; the first to Sarah White (5 children) (Sarah may have died as a result of childbirth complications) and the second to Abigail Dean. That marriage produced 7 children. Two sons, Weston Leroy and Elbridge also became physicians. After serving on the Union side during the Civil War, as surgeons, they both returned to establish practices in Lindsay, Ontario. Elbridge then moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota some time after 1879. The Harriman History (Feudalism to Freedom)by Lois Ware Thurston, comments on the Harriman Name. The name Harriman was not uncommon in England, suggesting there was no one Harriman family, but several unrelated families with the same name. Some of the earliest Harriman records were found in Uldale and it was only in these records that another Harriman with the Christian name Leonard was found. Uldale is in Cumberland County (the Lake District) in Northern England near the Scottish border (and recent center of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease) There are variant spellings of Harriman, Herriman, Harryman, Herryman, as in those days people often spelt a name the way it sounded. Charles W. Bardsley, author of ?A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames?, claims the name Harryman is an occupational name meaning servant of Henry which when spoken sounds like Harry?. When the Harriman?s left Uldale it was likely to find a better way of life, rather than religious freedom. Leonard and John Harriman found themselves caught up in the Great Migration of the 1630's. and arrived with Reverend E Rogers in New England in 1638. They set out from Rawley, Yorkshire, England.
