Lewis lived with Archibald Rhynd in North Warren, PA who I believe was his brother-in-law from Scotland. Jane joined Lewis in America about 1844. Coming from a farming family in Scotland, it was only natural that they pursue a farming life in America. They settled in western New York in the towns of Ellicottville and Machias, Cattaruagus County. Lewis and Jane started a farm and a family, mostly boys. William, John C., George, Archibald, Clara, and Charles were born quickly in succession. William and John went to war in 1864 as soon as John C. was old enough and got married when they got back home. Lewis and Jane moved from Machias to Allegany about 1859. The Adams & Slate Family Pages
Most of the search revolves around Jefferson County, New York and Hastings County Ontario,Canada and their surrounding areas.\r\n\r\nThe search for the Slates led me to Vermont where I hit a wall. Solomon Slate was born in 1775 in Vermont and then traveled to Grindstone Island NY. I am unable to locate his ancestors in Vermont.\r\n\r\nThe search of the Adams (1), yes, there are two separate Adams families here, has left me off at Joseph Adams. He was married to Susanna (aka Susan) Slate (b.1843-d.1917) and they lived in Gananoque, Ontario while they had their children, Eva, Charlotte,George and David. Susans grave marker reads wf.of Joseph jr.. She is buried in Depauville, NY. There are markers in the Lutheran Cemetery there that list a Joseph 1793-1840 and Lydia 1798 - 1843, but they were more likely grandparents if related at all. Lydia died the same year that Susan was born.\r\n\r\nNancy Adams Denis Family Tree |
