Nathaniel Adams Family of Southern Cayuga County, New York
My Adams family ancestors settled in the southern portion of Cayuga County, New York around the year 1800, possibly earlier. The first land deed I was able to locate for Nathaniel Adams dates 1803 in the Town of Scipio, and is shared with Elias Adams whose relation I have yet to establish. This deed establishes the residence of Nathaniel and Elias as being 'Both of the Town, County & State aforesaid'. The popularity of the Adams surname, the scarcity of public records from the period and conflicting data from existing sources has made it somewhat difficult to trace their origins and relations beyond this point. Descendants\ census records indicate that Nathaniel Adams and his wife, Eliza, were both born in Connecticut, but attempts to pinpoint their families there, and their migration west, have to this date failed. In addition to the Nathaniel and Elias Adams families, there was also a James G Adams family who settled in the area, whose burials are located in the Eddy Cemetery next to the Nathaniel Adams family plot. |
