David Bradford
Description: In behalf of my wife's family, I am researching the line of Bertelsens who arrived in the US from Denmark/Germany (the border was fluid due to ongoing conflict and conquest) circa 1870. Their settlement locations were Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana and the San Francisco Bay area of California.
The primary person of interest is Annie (Ane) Christine (Kristina) Bertelsen, born 18 July 1859 in Denmark, married to Richard Reynolds Fouke on 07 December 1887, died 27 April 1896, Bodie, Mono Co., CA., buried at Bodie (now, Bodie National Park). Annie Bertelsen had one child, George, born in Denmark and later, three children by R.R. Fouke: Hazel Lorene (b. 1889), Elsie M. (b. 1891) and Annie Marie (b. 1896). Annnie Christine died 5 days after the birth of her daughter, Annie Marie, who was consequently adopted and raised by family friends as Genevieve Killpatrick. Descendants of at least two of Ane's four children survive today.
Ane's husband, R.R. Fouke, a civil war veteran, lived to 92, and he was well known to people still living in 2004. He led an colorful and well-documented life. He shook Lincoln's hand during the Lincoln-Douglas debates, joined the Illinois Union volunteers (twice), escaped capture by Confederate soldiers, served as an indian agent in Oklahoma, lived the life of a Kansan pioneer sod-buster, a California gold miner and GAR post commandant. He married at least four times, but he described Ane Bertelsen as his one true love.
Ane's daughter, Genevieve was among the first women graduates of what is now UC-Berkley and later married Ivor Peterson. Hazel was the wife of California Methodist minister, Harry O. Simmons. Both women lived to over 100 years. Their sister, Elsie married P. Ellis and died mysteriously in San Francisco in 1923.
A general outline of this family is found at GenCircles web site address:

Ane Christine Bertelsen is the subject of a photo and life study conducted by the Danish Immigrant Project found at:
http://www.danishimmigrantproject.org/
Anyone interested in this family is invited to correspond. Census data, immigration information and photos all survive; the family. as we know it has been researched with care and careful documentation of sources which we would gladly make available to "cousins".
