Origin: The Hackbarth surname has it's origins in Germany. More specifically, it seems to have originated from what was the Pomeranian region of Germany/Prussia. Now the region formerly known as Pomerania is split by the Oder River, with it's western half remaining part of Germany, but the eastern half becoming part of Poland.

Origin of beck, Meaning of beck

Origin: Sir Hugh de Malebisse, from whom all the Beckwiths trace their origin, was a native of Normandy and accompanied William the Conqueror to England, where for his services he received grants of land. Among his descendants was Sir Hercules de Malebisse, who in 1226 married Lady Dame Beckwith Bruce, daughter of Sir William Bruce, Lord of Uglebarby, which lordship and other lands he had inherited from his ancestor, Sir Robert Bruce, of Skelton Castle, the progenitor of the royal Bruces of Scotland. It is from this marriage that the Beckwiths derive their name, Lady Beckwith Bruce possessing by inheritance an estate or manor called 'Beckwith,' in the old Anglo-Saxon 'Beckworth,' from 'Beck,' a brook, and 'Worth,' an estate. With a view, evidently, to the perpetuation of the name, her husband was required, by a marriage contract dated 1226, to assume the name of Beckwith. The coat-of-arms of the Beckwiths is as follows: Arms: Argent, a chevron gules fretty or, between three ! hinds' heads erased, of the second. On a chief engrailed gules a saltier engrailed between two roses or, in pale, and on a chief joined to the dexter and sinister sides a demi fleur-de-lis paleways or. Crest: An antelope proper, in mouth a branch vert. Motto: Jouir en bienHistory of West Virginia

Origin: Korsbeck means "cross stream" or where two streams came together. In Denmark, the house had the name and the family that lived in that house took on the name. Hence, the house built where two streams crossed became Korsbeck, and may not be any relationship to the last people who lived there or the next.

Origin: 'Vanderbeck' comes from the Flemish (and Dutch' Van de beek, which means 'living near the small river'. My grandfather (?1899) told me, that the family 'Vandebeek' moved all to the Frenh speaking part of Belgium, where the people couldn't pronounce it right, so it became 'Vanderbeck'. He told me that he was the first generation, coming back to their roots. Probably, it's true. In the French part of Belgium, you'll find much more 'Vanderbeck', here in the Flemish part, it's all family of us.
