He also had a Sister Bassie Davis She is my Great Grand Aunt Richard & Mary - they called her Bambi had only one child my Grand Father Samuel Davis aka (Samuel Jofar) Born 1883,in Richmond, Virginia. He ran away from home and was able to pass as white; He joined the Merchant Marine and lived in Brazil with a Family named Jofar. After he returned to America and rejoined his family he told them that Davis was a Slave name and his free name was Jofar. He would never use that name again he was not a slave to any Man, His father did not like this and there were many family arguments about it. Samuel Jofar married Ella Pierman my Grandmother she was Born 1884 in Lynchburg, Virginia the Jofar & Davis family arrived in Phoenix, Arizona about 1915 Just before the Birth of my Mother Wyona Jofar-Beasley. Samuel Jofar Became one of the 1st Black Doctor's in the state of Arizona He was a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine His Office was located near 11th Street & Washington in Phoenix, Arizona He was also a Barber And I still can remember my 1st hair cut as a child. Richard & Mary Davis are buried at Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona Samuel & Ella Jofar are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona The Children of Samuel & Ella Jofar are: Wyona L. About 1745 Stephen Bates was born in New York and he married in 1769. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had a son, Stephen Bates, who was baptized according to Rumbout Presbyterian Church records in Duchess County, New York in 1772. This Stephen Bates married Elizabeth Renne in 1802. Their son,Stephen Lyman Bates, was born in 1807 in Owego,NY and died in the Rockford, Illinois area in 1860.His son Levi Decatur Bates was born in 1836 in Owego,NY. His son Mark General Bates was born in 1886 in Long Pine,Nebraska. My father, Edward M. Bates was born in 1920 in Washington State. my paternal grandmother, Ollie Deweese, had family in Wa, Ne, Kentucky, and Pa after leaving Holland. My mothers maiden name was Kiichle and her grandparents immigrated from Germany to Ohio, Wisconsin, Idaho and Washington. Most of her relatives may have gone to Canada. My maternal grandmothers family were the Claytons who were from Wa, Missouri, and Maryland. My wifes maiden name is May and her relatives come from the Spokane, Washington area. Her maternal grandparents had the last name of Marks and Fleenor and lived in Spokane also. We are also looking at the Strand families of Oregon and Wisconsin as they are related through marriage as are the Smack family of Philadelphia and New Jersey. Other related families through marriage are the Ruby's of Iowa and Illinois and Knotts of Oregon. |

BUSH-Texas SMITH-Oklahoma Missouri BANKS-Oklahoma Missouri ANDERS-Missouri Ruben L. BATES, my g-grandfather, is thought to have died in Wilson, OK in the early to mid-1930's. He was married to Elizabeth KING and migrated to OK from ARK. There were at least 2 sons, Isreal Clayton BATES(b8/3/1888 in ARK, d3/18/1980 in Lubbock, TX), and Albert BATES(bd unknown in ARK, d unknown in Wilson, OK). Albert BATES was a Baptist preacher. my g-g-grandfather, ? SMITHERMAN is thought to have died in 1887 after being stabbed during a water rights dispute. He married Mattie Victoria COLEMAN(b10/6/1867 in TX, d7/4/1958 in Lubbock, TX). They had 1 son, Barnes Carroll SMITHERMAN(b11/26/1886 in TX, d2/7/1961 in Lubbock, TX).
