Bayles and Upchurch Families of Harnett County, NC
Harnett County North Carolina was formed in 1855 from Cumberland County. My ancestors were there long before this took place. Solomon Bales (Bayles) bought his land in 1816, married and raised his children. Many of his descendants can still be found in Coats and the surrounding communities. The Upchurch?s originated in England came to North Carolina in the 1700?s. Benjamin Upchurch, thought to be a descendant of Michael Upchurch, came to Harnett from Franklin County. In 1850 he married Arabella Medlin and they began their family. |

Charles served with the Royal Artillary during WWI. Charles' parents were John Henry and Margaret Brown. Bertha's parents, John Thomas ALDRED & Flora PATRICK, were from the Sheet/Horndean/Catherington area of Hampshire. My maternal g-g-grandfather, Jesse SARGEANT emigrated from England to Ontario in 1850 & married Elizabeth BARNES. Their daughter, Hanna M. SARGEANT married Thomas COLEMAN in 1886. He had two sons Jesse and Theodore. Jesse married Tessie Doxey. It is believed that her mother was an Indian Squaw. Alfred A. Barnes. He was born in 1886 in New York and died in 1954 in Colorado Springs, Co. He married Edith Hintz in 1906. He may have changed his name to Borntraeger around 1917. His family was from Germany. SMIRK family. Thomas Smirk married Ester Herkles in England in mid 1800's. Some Smirk family members immigrated to Brooklyn NY in 1919-1920. |
