Origin: As of 1990 there were 1,121 Polish citizens named ZIEMKIEWICZ; there were Ziemkiewiczes in virtually every province, but the largest numbers lived in the provinces of Warsaw (217), Bydgoszcz (53), Plock (117), Wloclawek (156). That means the name is most common in an area of northcentral Poland-but it's not confined to that area, and in any case that area is too large to be much help... The name comes from the root _ziemia_, 'land, earth,' but -IEWICZ is a suffix meaning 'son of,' so the name means 'son of Ziemek or Ziemko'; those might have been names in their own right, or nicknames, 'son of the soil' is what it literally means but that doesn't really sound quite right.
