Origin: The name puryear and its variants are originally Hebrew or Egyptian. The name Puryear is a variant of the Purryer, which is a varinat of Purrier and Perrier. The name comes Periou the younger son Budic, Count of Cornouailles, Brittany France (Referance: the book 'The Norman People' Genealogical Pub. Co. Inc.) and (Bloobline of the Holy Grail by Laurence Gardner) The name traced to Parar the Gr.-Gr.-Gr.-Great Grandson of Joseph of Arimathea, who is traced to Moses who was most likely the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten . Akhenatens physical form indicates a possible human - extraterrestrial orgin. ( Peri - a supernatural being in Persian folklore descended from fallen angels and excluded from paradise until penance is accomplished. Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 1973.) Michael D. Barnes, Scottsboro, Alabama. !

Origin: The earliest Lyon ancestor I have information on was Norman de Leonne, from France, who fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, 1066. His son was Sir Roger de Leonne, 1040, also born in France. His descendents were: Sir Paganus de Leonne, 1075, France, then name changed. Hugo de Leonibus (or Leonne), 1121, France, Ernoid de Leonibus, 1150, France, John de Leonibus (alias Lyon), 1176, Norfolk, England, Pagan de Leonibus, 1195, Norfolk, England, and then name changed again. Sir John de Lyouns (info states: grandfather at head of Lyon family in Scotland), 1225, Norfolk, England, next generation was John de Lyon, 1250, Norfolk, England and his son was the first LYON; Sir Adam Lyon, 1285, Norfolk, England. This inormation was copied from the Salt Lake City Library by a co-worker of my uncle.

Origin: After nearly a century of family research, the origin of the Yancey family and the Yancey name itself, for the most part, still lie in obscurity. The history of the Yancey family has been traced back to the early 1700's to the colony of Virginia where branches of the family were living in the counties of New Kent, Hanover, Louisa, Spotsylvania and Culpeper. Where did these families come from? When and how did they immigrate to America? How did the name itself originate? These are questions that have eluded Yancey researchers for decades, most of the answers to which still lie undiscovered. What follows is not the discussion of any recent major discovery concerning the origin of the family, but a general summary of the various theories and traditions concerning the history of the family as well as some rather general information concerning life in Virginia during the 17th century. This is given to help the reader develop some general insight as to who our early Yancey ancestors were, and what life may have been like for them in the early Virginia Colony.

Origin: There are several names in this country of like pronunciation, and only slightly diverse spelling, Yokum, Yocum, Yoakum, Joachim, and perhaps others, which it seems probable are of common Swedish origin. It is reasonable to suppose that all bearing these names are descendants of one ancestor.%0a%0aOne of the almost forgotten chapters of modern and American history concerns the short-lived effort of Sweden to be a colonizing power. In the early days after the discovery of America, the active days of English, Spanish, French, and Dutch enterprise in exploration and expansion, Sweden also sought to have a part in the unfolding possibilities of empire. Their military power and energy were not equal to permanent and successful conduct of the enterprise, but New Sweden once lay near the Delaware, and several remains of this short-lived Swedish colony are still to be found in Delaware and in Philadelphia. To this part of history the present family owes its American transplantation.%0a%0a(I) Peter Joachim, the founder of this family, came from Sweden, and helped to establish the Wicaco settlement, near Philadelphia, several years before the coming of William Penn, when the country along the Delaware was New Sweden. After Penn laid out his city History of West Virginia

But the two orgins are Native American's, mainly the Florida Seminoles and South Carolina Creeks. And surprisingly enough German. Originally pronounced Yunghbluth change in the first German migration to the Colonies in the early 1800's.

Origin: Yeoman/Yeomans/Youman/Youmans probably originated form Old Frisian or Old Flemish. Originally meaning a villager or freeman who follows a chief. He was Ceorl who was born free. In the days of Anglo Norman rule, the middling and higher class of peasantry diminished almost to extinction. The lower class of peasantry probably disappeared into slavery. The middling class became known as cottagers, and then villeins (Anglo Saxon Term).

Origin: Junker from Jung+Herr originally meaning young nobleman.
The American Heritage dictionary states that Younker, as an English word, archaicly mean young nobleman. It is doubtful, however, that this was ever used as an English surname.
