Origin of Yeoman, Meaning of Yeoman
Origin: Yeoman/Yeomans/Youman/Youmans probably originated form Old Frisian or Old Flemish. Originally meaning a villager or freeman who follows a chief. He was Ceorl who was born free. In the days of Anglo Norman rule, the middling and higher class of peasantry diminished almost to extinction. The lower class of peasantry probably disappeared into slavery. The middling class became known as cottagers, and then villeins (Anglo Saxon Term).
