The family is of English ancestry and settled in Lancaster as early as 1150. Record is made of Robert Lawrence, of Lancaster, who distinguished himself at the siege of Acre and was knighted Sir Robert of Ashton Hall. From Robert Lawrence, of Lancaster, England, many of the Lawrences in America trace their origin. The first of this family to settle in New England was John Lawrence, who immigrated to America and located in Watertown, where on February 28, 1636, he purchased land.
