Origin: My Grandfather told us that the name Whan was actually Dutch and pronounced Vaughn,they came to Ireland in the 1680's with William of Orange,as part of his Dutch army that fought at the battle of the Boyne in 1690 against the Catholic King James.Through time the name changed to be Whan,probably due to the Irish accent and how things are pronounced there.I am originally from Magheralin County Down,Northern Ireland,but emigrated to the USA in 2003.My Grandfather was from Banbridge County Down,but had relatives from Cookstown.
