Origin: The first part of the name 'Yel' was thought to refer to a well, or source of water, the 'ton' was town or village. Thus the name was most likely a local source of water. I have several document which give more detail, drop me a line if you want one. Btw: In my line 'Yelvington' had a silent Y, and was changed to Elvington. This is an old English & Irish line.

Origin: Hickenloopers first came to America from Mittleschlechtbach, Germany in October 1754. The ship 'Peggy' on which Andreas Heckenleib arrived in this country sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, thus many think the name is Dutch. I have been told the name means 'hedge-hopper/thief.' I understand there are still Heckenliables in Germany today. Some Heckenliables ventured through eastern Europe and Russia first, before coming to America. When they arrived they called themselves Heckenlively.

Origin: Culver was originally Colver and from England. It is a type of pigeon so the original Colvers were probably keepers of pigeons. Several sources say that all Culvers are descendents of Edward Colver, a Puritan who came to Boston in 1635 on the same boat as Winthrop, later governor of Rhode Island. He married Ann Ellis who was also born in England. Edward helped found Mystic, Conn. and most of the family stayed in that area for several years, eventually migrating throughout the country, but at first to New Jersey, Vermont, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Some researchers feel that some Culvers are descended from Edward's brothers who emigrated to Ireland and then their descendents came to the U.S. Several genealogy books have been written about the Culver family.
