Origin: The Garoutte family came from France. My ggggggggrandfather, Michael Garoutte outfitted several ships with his own money and came to aid the colonies in their fight for freedom. He was a cousin to King Louis the sixteenth. He gave all of his money to the colonies and a fire destroyed the records of this. He was never repaid and died quite poor. Every Garoutte in the United States can be traced back to him. I also have information on several generations before him.

Origin: The name Routledge is a place name based on old Anglican words. Its origins come from the words Rudd (variant Redd) and Loec (variants Lache and Leche) i.e. Ruddlache which means red stream.

In the 15th centrury the Routledges are found across disputed land between the Scots and English Border. On the present day map their is a Routledge Burn in Kershope Forest less than 1 mile from the current Scottish border.

Name variants include DeRoutluge from Norman times, from the middle ages and onwards Routledge becomes the main spelling, later on an 'o' is dropped becoming Rutledge also an extra 't' is added becoming Ruttledge (this last spelling variant appears to come exclusively from Ireland).

Origin: Originally My Great-Great-Grandfather's name was Gardiner (Norman). In order to evade a debt he changed his Name to Sutton since he lived in that town in Surrey, England, UK. They were (some still are) Farmers. The name originally means from the South of Town as indicated above. However, it was not uncommon in the UK from before the Dark Ages to give your Surname as that of were you were originally from. This is not to be confused with being Lord of that Manor, in which case you would be John De Sutton, for example. This, as in my case, could be the origin of other people having this Surname. Sutton is a very pleasant town not too far from London, and I feel a bit like I "own" the place, but I have'nt succeded in getting any free beers there yet for having our Surname (have a go! sic). Chris Sutton is a well known Soccer player (Striker) in the UK (Plays for Glasgow Celtic at the moment). Most Suttons in the UK live in the South and East, and have Blonde Hair (We have Dark Hair). Nevertheless I am proud to bear the Sutton given Surname from my Father.
