Origin: What's in Your Name? If the present day Garners went on a genealogical hunt, they would go to France to trace the original family roots. The name would be found as Garneau & Garnier. Before it ever became a surname, Garnerius was a popular personal name during the 11th Century. The old French word of 'Germer' meant a storehouse for corn or grain' and the name was given to a man who worked at, or perhaps the keeper of the grainery. The latin 'granum' means 'seed'. The surname came to England from france at the time of the Conquest and is found written originally as Gerner. Geogrey gerner is recorded on Tax Rolls of Essex in 1272. William del Gerner lived in Lancashire, England in 1332.

Origin: HAUS, to all appearances, is characterictic in origin and is generally associated with German speaking background. It would have the meaning of 'householder, or head of a family' In our family the legend is that in early Switzerland our ancestors lived in a chalet up on a mountain, overlooking a village. The villagers referred to them as the family from'das haus', thus becoming the basis for the name HAUS. A good tale, but of course without any verification. It must be remembered that most German surnames are derived from occupations, colors, descriptions, as well as locations.

Origin: The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs agree that the name MacInnes and all of its variants are of ancient and unique origin. The celtic version is closer to Mac Aonghais. During ancient times the Mac Innes clan followed King Colla from Ireland to Dalriada and established themselves there as one of the original clans to settle that part of Scotland from Ireland. They weathered many hardships but the final straw was the Jacobite Rebellion, which split the clan and led to the Highland Clearances. As a result, the clan has been scattered across the United States and Canada, with some contingents in Australia. The various customs and immigration services of the areas where the Scotsmen settled seem to have corrupted the name many times, leaving a wide variety of variants.

Origin: My mother was a Loftis. She is from Alabama/Mississippi. My great grandparents are from Ireland. There is a story about the difference between Loftis and Loftus. There were two brothers who got in a huge fight to the point that they no longer wanted to be associated. As a gesture of disgust, one changed the spelling of their name so that they would no longer being associated. A good friend of mine in high school was a Loftus. We both went to our relatives and asked if they knew why they were spelt differently. And amazingly enough, we both came back with the same story. Both of us having relatives who came over on the boat from Ireland. Hope this helps.
