Origin: Crumpler is an occupational name for the Old English cromphet ? a flat, thin cake which was often fried on a griddle. In Medieval England, the Cromplers or Crumplers made and sold these 'crompled cakes'. They were favorite items at county fairs, market days, and festivals, similar to our doughnuts today. Tea and crumpets are a favorite afternoon snack in England and Scotland even today.

Origin: Most of us have gotten one of those mail-in heraldry reports that say Kimmel means 'one who gathers caraway seeds.' And Kimmel (actually K?mmel) is the German word for caraway. As a matter of fact, several of the coats-of-arms awarded to K?mmels in public positions in Kassel, Hessen state, Germany, had the caraway plant or a figure holding a caraway plant on them.%0aHowever, the word Kimmel and surname Kimmel evolved separately. Professor Hermann K?mmell's report in the Deutsches Geschlechterbuch (Vol. 66, which offers the lineage for J. Michael Kimmel's ancestors back to Dilmanus Kumel of c.1391 Neuenkerken) cites the research of the then-renowned German genealogist, Dr. Schoener of Marburg. See Website for more information.

Origin: For many years, researchers of the Summitt line seemed to assume the family was of English heritage related to the normal English meaning of 'highest point, part, or elevation' as with the top of a mountain. This view was shattered with the discovery of the German Lutheran heritage of early Summitts in Eastern Tennessee and Central Indiana. These Tennessee and Indiana Lutheran Summitts turned out to be directly related to a Francis Summit who settled in the Tyron County area of North Carolina in the latter part of the 1700s, later to become Lincoln County and then Catawba County. In modern terms, this area is Northwest of Charlotte in the area of the towns of Hickory, Newton, Lincolnton, and Conover and crossed Southwest to Northeast by Interstate 40. Francis Summit and his family was apparently the only Summit family in this community. They were a part of a growing German community in North Carolina settling west of the Catawba River and from all appearances were devoted Lutherans from the beginning. Origin: There are several ideas or ways in which the name Marcum came into being. Here are a few of the ideas that I have found: 1. According to Don Marcum, he was told by his 90 year old uncle. We were Markhams long ago. James Marcum, Secretary to John Rolfe of Pocahonest was the first Marcum to come to America. This Marcum was in the settlement of James Town, VA (1607) led by Captain John Smith. This was before the May Flower compact (1621). The Marcum became business men and farmers of Virginia. Wilson, sr. family took its name from its land of Markham in Nottingham. Alexander de Markham (Alexander of Markham) was constable of the Castle of Nottingham in the reign of Henry III. From him descended Sir John Markham, Knight Judge of the Common Pleas in the Reigns of Richard II. Henry IV (1396-1407). 2. I have also found that both Marcum and Markham are from the Marcums of Wayne Co, KY. The name was Markham before the County clerks started spelling it phonetically.

Origin: Mangum has been traced to three countries (Ireland, Germany and France, but the Irish derevation is by far the most common. I am part Mangum myself. Many Mangums settled in North Carolina and surrounding states and worked West from there. It is a direct corruption of at least one important Irish name (Mangan). This is an ancient family from the West of Ireland. Mangum is only one of a dozen variations of it. Some of these are natural (i.e. originated in Ireland) some originated on this side of the Atlantic because, lets face it, our ancestors weren't always that literate, and Americans would definitely have difficulty understanding Hiberno-English. Many of these immigrants were no more than 1 or 2 generations separated from a time when many Irish were still speaking Irish. The Website, www.infokey.com says that the name is of origination in Connacht, the western province of Ireland. I would like to know more about the origination of the name myself if anyone has any additional info about the name in general,or a man named Charles Luther Mangum from North Carolina who also lived in South Carolina for a time and by family legend was an Irish Immigrant in the last quarter of the 1800s.
