The Jarcho-Yarcha-Turoff-Turow-Bermant families from Slutsk
The origins of this family start in Ancient Judea and stretch to Medieval Spain and Southern France and the town of Lunel where the Ha-Yarchi families lived until late 1300's- early 1400's. The family then moved North and East into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in what became the province of Minsk Gubernia in present day Belarus. The tows of Baranovitch, Slutsk ,Turov and Kletsk and the surrounding towns were where they lived during the 1700's and 1800's. The earliest named ancestor was Zimel Yarcha(1750-1800). His descendents spread to other areas of Russia such as Pinsk, Minsk, Yekatrinoslav and Yousovka before leaving for Israel,England,Belgium,Argentina and most to the USA. The Altices/Alticks of Virginia
Johannes Franziskus Altig (John Altick) arrived in America in 1749 as a one year old infant with his father Daniel. Johannes and his wife Mary Simmons had 14 children who were either born in Maryland or Virginia. Johannes settled in Franklin Co, VA where he raised all of his children into adulthood. In 1818, he and most of his children moved to the Dayton, Ohio area. Henry Altig first appeared in the 1800 census in Mason County, KY. a late son of Daniel Altick migrated from Schonau to America. Or he could be the son of Tillman Altick who was a Revolutionary soldier and is known to have lived in Berkley County Virginia. It is reported by some sources that Henry came to KY from VA. My grandfather was Joseph Oat Altick and he was born in Boones' Mill, Franklin Co, VA. His birth certificate shows him listed as Altick, but there was evidently a pronouncment change in the late 1880's. In fact, this family is listed as ALTIS in the 1900 census. |

My grandfather, Peder Johannes (John Peter) Svendsen immigrated in 1914 on the SS United States (not the famous liner but the old steamer). He was born in a house called Sejehuset in a small village called Slaglille in Alsted, Sor? amt in 1892. His mother's family had lived in the house for generations. I have traced his father's family (Jacob Conrad Svendsen) back to Holsteinborg on the southern coast of Sealand not too far from Slaglille still in Sor? amt. Jacob Conrad was born in F?rslev in 1824 to Jacob Peter Svendsen and Sophie Charlotte Husum. Sophie's parents were Andreas Husum and Birgette M?ller of Holsteinborg.
