Origin: The Roman georapher Ptolomy in his work of 150 AD describes the Pict tribe of Tais in Lowland (Tayside) Scotland. Supporting Ptolomy?s report is the hill Teass in Fife. Some published genealogies (eg, the Leslie family) date the Teas name back to 1250 AD. A cluster of ?Teas? surnames appear in Lowland Scotland from 1450 and later. In 1613, William Teas arrived in Donegal, Ulster and Teas families became established there. Numerous spellings of the original ?Teas? have evolved, in part because of the phonetic inconsistency between the presumed pronunciation of the ?ea? diphthong as a long ?e? instead of the actual pronunciation as a long ?a?. Interestingly, this problem is lacking with the original ?Tais? spelling.
