Origin: According to my family our Bartell was originally Barte or Bartee and later became Barta then Barteall and finally Bartell. Most of the changes occured after we immigrated to the U.S. to aid in naturalization (no one could spell it) but no one is sure just when that occured or why.

Origin: STEADHAM is one of the many spelling variations of the surname STIDDEM. Timen STIDDEM (later anglicized to Timothy STIDHAM) was an immigrant from Sweden in the 17th century to New Sweden, now Wilmington, Delaware. All of Timen's children and grandchildren spelled their surname as STEDHAM. By the 4th generation, most of Timen's descendants began spelling their surname as STIDHAM, the same spelling that Timen had used to sign his surname in his will. The exception to this was the descendants of Timen's son Benedictus STEDHAM. His descendants had moved south and west and today are congregated mainly in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Texas. The letter 'A' in the first syllable 'STEAD' began to appear in documents relating to STEADHAMS during the mid 1800s.

Origin of Tea, Meaning of Tea
Origin: The Roman georapher Ptolomy in his work of 150 AD describes the Pict tribe of Tais in Lowland (Tayside) Scotland. Supporting Ptolomy?s report is the hill Teass in Fife. Some published genealogies (eg, the Leslie family) date the Teas name back to 1250 AD. A cluster of ?Teas? surnames appear in Lowland Scotland from 1450 and later. In 1613, William Teas arrived in Donegal, Ulster and Teas families became established there. Numerous spellings of the original ?Teas? have evolved, in part because of the phonetic inconsistency between the presumed pronunciation of the ?ea? diphthong as a long ?e? instead of the actual pronunciation as a long ?a?. Interestingly, this problem is lacking with the original ?Tais? spelling.
