Ankrom History - Ankroms In America
Ankrom is derived from the Gaelic Crom, 'the crooked, 'the crook, and Alne or Ane, is the name of a small branch of the Tiviot River in Scotland. Ancrum, meaning: small crooked branch of the Tiviot, is a village situated in a bend of Alne water, a tributary of the Tiviot; dating back to 1124-1153 with the building of a church under David I, King of Scotland. The Ankrom Clan are direct decendants of Clan Kerr, who the Kerr or Ker Clan are from one Baron Kerr that came to England with William the Conqueror. Baron Kerr is one of the family of King Ollyf Kjrs, that reigned in Normandy in 1005. The name Kerr (Karre) stands in the roll of fame, according to Norman orthography. It has been said that the family was a noble and illustrious one during Norman/Viking Rule, before the conquest of England; and Williams champion was no doubt the parent stock and progenitor of the English and Scottish Kerr's. It was from the noble house of Lothian that the two great Boarder Houses of Cessford and Ferniehurst, and being also Earls of Ancrum that the Ankrom Clan or Ankrom families derived.
