Origin: The surname Spaan is a Dutch surname, originating from the province of North Holland, specially the area of the city of Amsterdam and surroundings. Spaans is a variant found specially in the province of South Holland (The Hague, Scheveningen). My personal family tree goes back to the early 18th century . The meaning of Spaan in Dutch is shaving (from wood) or filing (from metal). So many of the ancestors must have been in the shipbuilding (woodworking) business, which correllates with Amsterdam (which had many shipyards in the 17th and 18th century).
