Origin of Rho, Meaning of Rho
Origin: The Origin In medieval times the chief messenger of The Netherlands imperial court was a "Brenger." This, combined with "hof" (court) founded the family name of "Brengerhof," later changed to "Brinkerhoff."
(from The Joliet (IL) Herald News, August 1936) ?1936 United Feature Syndicate, Inc.
The Spelling
As far as can be ascertained, the "c" as in Brinckerhoff, has never been used in Holland. At the present time the family in the Netherlands use only one "f", spelling the name Brinkerhof.
For reasons unknown, our ancestor, Joris Dircksen, added the "c" to his surname when he came to America and settled on Long Island. His older son, Hendrick, when he moved to New Jersey, dropped the "c" and reverted to the original spelling. The descendants of the younger son, Abraham, who remained on Long Island and upstate New York, tended to retain the "c".
But since at least two-thirds of the family in America are descended from Hendrick, the spelling without the "c" is much more wide-spread, and many of Abraham's descendants have also dropped the "c" from the name.
The usage is far from consistent, and we have found instances where in the same immediate family, one brother uses the "c" and another does not. We have found only two instances where descendants of Hendrick have used the "c" in their names.
The name is sometimes spelled Brinkerhoff or Brinkerhuf, and in one case Van Blinkerhoff.
