I am however aware of Redings from Switzerland also spelled with one 'd', but I can find no connection between them and the Luxembourg line. Reddings with two 'D's' appear to have origins in England and Ireland.

Origin: Parsley, according to my research is either a place name(saxon: Parr's leah, or Parr's grove), or a variant on Pashley, Paisley, Paslow, or Presley. The English name seems to be from northern England and southern Scotland, however, its also rumored to be Irish. There is also a group of Parsleys from Norway, but I have no knowledge if the two are connected. In the United States, Parsley is most often found in the southeast, around Tennessee, Virginia and Arkansas. The earliest American reference I found to the name was a death certificate from Virginia dated c.1720

Origin: ...According to tradition, the first person to have this name was a child who was found under a tree called 'Rowan Tree', or mountain ash tree, growing in Yorkshire, England. The child was a boy and was dressed in fine clothing. He was found on the estate of a nobleman who took compassion the child and raised him as his own son, naming him 'Rowantree' after the tree under which he was found. The origin of the child he did not know and never found out. This boy's descendants now run in the thousands, and they live in all parts ofthe world....'('Rowntree and Rountree Family HIstory, 1521-1953' by Joseph Gustave Rountree ll)

Origin: Lehrer is a German word meaning teacher. Therefore, the origin must have been occupational. I have traced the family back as far as the seventeenth century (Rhineland , Germany). Lehrer became Lair on 9 July 1799 when Catherine Lehrer signed her last will and testament in Rockingham County, Virginia in the presence of three witnesses. This Anglicizes the German Lehrer to Lair.

Origin: It is said that the name Grier was originally MacGregor, in Scotland, and this particular branch fought with the Campbells, invited the Campbells to a dinner and then killed many of them. The MacGregor lands were taken away, thus they became unlanded outlaws. The name was also taken away, they were kicked out of the country, they went to Ireland and the name became Grierson. It was shortened to Grier some time later- either before or after they emmigrated to the US. This information came from the geneology section of the NYC Library - about 40 years ago.

In ancient English and early American records the name is found in various spellings. Origin: The Barrys came from Wales with the Anglo-Norman invasions in 1170. They soon possessed a vast area of Co. Cork. There were so many Barrys that, to distinguish one from the other, they were known as Barry M?r (the Senior), Barry ?g (the Young), Barry Roe (the Red), Barry Maol (the Bald) and Barry Liadir (the Strong). They aquired titles such as Earl of Barrymore and Viscount of Buttevant. This tipperary town got its name from the Norman French 'boutez-en-avant' ('strike forward'), the rallying cry of the Barrys in their many battles. Like so many of the nobility of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Barrys squandered their money, drinking and gambling until most of their splendid houses were gone. A hunting lodge, Fota Island (in the harbour of the City of Cork) remains, taken over by Cork Univerisity. It is beautifully preserved and the furnishings include many Irish paintings.
