Origin: The information we have is that Cranston was first known as de Cranstoun, then Cranstoun, then Cranston, and in some cases even in our own family tree Cranson. The de Cranstoun were an old and well known Midlothian family. The name having been assumed from the lands of Cranstoun, which lay along the River Tyne in the counties of Edinburgh and Roxburgh. The Cranstoun's were border fighters, the family motto being ' Thou Shalt Want Ere I Want'. Ancestor William was the first Lord of Cranstoun, so created in 1609. He was captain of the King's Guard under James I of Scotland. I assume this information is correct as it is noted in family letters of Samuel Cranston (1659-1727), son of John (1625-1680), both were Governors of Rhode Island.

Origin: Although the ancestry can be traced back to the Viking origins of Halfdan the Old, it would appear that the family name of Granville was not actually established until the year 1012; with the marriage of Mauger, the youngest son of The 3rd Duke of Normandy,( Richard the Fearless), to Germaine, heiress to Aubert, the second Earl of Corbeil.%0a%0aTwo generations later, the brothers Robert Fitzhamon and Richard de Granville followed the Conqueror (William the 7th Duke of Normandy) to England and established the family on land in North Cornwall and South Wales. The Buckinghamshire Granvilles are descended from Richard's son Gerard.

Origin: The surname came from the Norman conquerors of England. The descendents of Eudo 'Comes Brittanie' came through England. One of the descendants married Helewisa de Glanville, the daughter of Ranulf de Glanville. One of the sons was named Ranulf for his grandfather, and he named his son Ranulf. In the custom of the day, that son was Ranulf FitzRanulf. The family name develped from Ranulf FitzRanulf. Most branches dropped the Fitz later, my line in the late 1800's.

Origin: Grandin (Swedish version) -- My ancestors' surname was introduced around 1830 when my great-great-great-grandfather combined his father's 'military name' ('Gran' or fir tree in English) with a common Swedish 2nd syllable. Prior to the 19th century, surnames were almost entirely based on a father's first name (the last name of Johan's is Johansson, for example). Sweden, the name is pronounced gron-DEEN.
