Origin: The name Mudra looks like a variation of the names I've listed above. My mother' maiden name was Mudry. Her father came from the Ukraine at the turn of the century. The Ukraine was known as Galicia then. My grandfather came from the province of L'viv and the village of Dmytrje. Also, I've just recently found the Mudry name in France on a French Geneology site. The LDS has a book with the Mudry line in it(French line). I was told when young that the Mudry's were a 'league of Nations' that is they had many nationalities in them and we have Spanish, German and French blood. The differences in spelling may have been the immigrants trying to translate their name into English for the authorities.

Origin: The information we have is that Cranston was first known as de Cranstoun, then Cranstoun, then Cranston, and in some cases even in our own family tree Cranson. The de Cranstoun were an old and well known Midlothian family. The name having been assumed from the lands of Cranstoun, which lay along the River Tyne in the counties of Edinburgh and Roxburgh. The Cranstoun's were border fighters, the family motto being ' Thou Shalt Want Ere I Want'. Ancestor William was the first Lord of Cranstoun, so created in 1609. He was captain of the King's Guard under James I of Scotland. I assume this information is correct as it is noted in family letters of Samuel Cranston (1659-1727), son of John (1625-1680), both were Governors of Rhode Island.

In this instance, the name indicates 'son of Breasail', an ancient Gaelic personal name derived from the Gaelic 'bres' meaning 'stife or brave and strong in conflict'. This was a popular name in early Ireland and is especially common as the name of early kings. The most famous of these is Brassal Belach, and early king of Leinster. It was also popularized through the devotion to saint Bressal whose feast day was in May. Today this surname is predominately found in Co. Waterford and Offaly, but a century ago it was also numerous in the Counties Tipperary, Kelkenny, Limmerick and Kerry. The surname O'Breasil is recorded in Co. Waterford as early as 1308 and it is found as O'Bressyl in Co. Cork in 1285. In 1537 one Brassell occurs among the commoners of Kilkenny and in 1551 Mahowne Brassill, a kern (Irish soldier, lightly armed) was convicted at Clommel of having stolen cattle. In the 'census' of 1659 the name Brassel was recorded as the principal Irish surname in the Co. Waterford barony of upperthird. In 1608 Denis Brazil of Ballyduff was detained
