Joseph Baskier,Jr. was born in Buckingham, Quebec about 1834. He was orphaned at an early age. In 1858 he married Letitia Pollock (from Ireland) in Ontario. They had nine living children and moved to Southwestern Manitoba in 1889 to farm.
