My father,Helmut Zips, immigrated to Canada in 1955. His younger brother, Karl also immigrated around that time. Two of his sisters immigrated to Australia at the same time. One sister and one brother stayed in Germany, to reside around Hamburg Germany for the duration of their lives. During the second world war, my parents lived in Germany. My father was in one of the German Army's anti-aircraft divisions,and stationed for the better part of the war in France. He spent several years in an English PWO camp after the war and returned to Germany. Prior to the Outbreak of the second world war, my father apprenticed as a foundry worker. One of his brothers, now long deceased, (Willie), apparently joined the Nazi party and was either a brown or black shirt. He was killed in an automobile accident sometime in the early days of Hitler Germany My father was born in a place called Gross Herlitz in 1917n to Rudolf Zips and Bozena Ochota. After the second world war, it became part of Austria. Prior to and during the war, it was part of the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. Adelle married William Burgess. Emma died in infancy. James Gallagher had an Uncle Peter who also died in Grass Valley. He also had an Uncle Frank and Aunt Ann Gallagher. |
