Origin of Oort, Meaning of Oort

Origin: MONTFORT, origin northern France, sometimes referred to as Walloons from where they lived in what is now or near Belgium. Before 1600, one family line moved into Holland and the name took the Dutch spelling, Monfoort. The first Montfort in America arrived in 1624 aboard the EENDRACHT, a ship of settlers sent from Holland by the Dutch West Indies Company, settling on Long Island, moving westward into New Jersey, then to Pennsylvania, and finally to Kentucky, by 1781. The move into Kentucky was with the Low Dutch Colony, led by Hendrick Banta 3rd. Many of this colony were among the first to join the Shakers of Kentucky, building and living at Pleasant Hill, in Mercer County. Some family lines from this first Montfort family, spell it Monfort, pronouncing it MON-fert. Others have the Montfort spelling and pronounce both t's .
