Mary Yonan
Description: YONAN is an ASSYRIAN SURNAME. My husband's surname is YONAN and he is a second generation Assyrian-American. He only can trace his YONAN ancestry back to his father. My husband's father was born in a Presbyterian mission village (exact name unknown ) in either Urmia, located in modern-day Iran (previously the Persian Empire) or the Hakkari Mountains (modern-day Turkey) during the reign of the Ottoman Turks. He left to escape persecution because his family was Christian and emigrated to America. From naturalization records and a short biographical sketch written by one of my father-in-law's grandchildren, we have conflicting information that he was either from a village near Urmia or a village near Julamarg in the Hakkarri Mountains. My father-in-law migrated to the United States in 1909 when he was 18 years old. The ship manifest listed his name as Bakus Amu but he changed it to Benjamin Yonan at Ellis Island. Amu was an extremely rare surname because he is the only Amu in Ellis Island records. I want to encourage all Assyrians to join the Assyrian Heritage DNA Project. If you know Assyrians with surnames other than YONAN, they also are invited to join. Men should order a Y-chromosome DNA test to trace their father's Assyrian ancestry and men can also order a mtDNA or maternal DNA test to trace their Assyrian mother's ancestry. Assyrian women can only order a mtDNA or maternal DNA test to trace her Assyrian mother's ancestry, because women do not inherit Y-chromosome DNA. The DNA results webpage is at http://www.ftdna.com/public/AssyrianHeritageDNAProject Assyrians can join the Assyrian Heritage DNA Project at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=U31042&special=True&projecttype=G These are the DNA tests for a man to consider if he ONLY wants to learn about his Assyrian father's line: (Choose only one) (1) 25 Marker Y-DNA test which tests the paternal line ONLY--$148 (US dollars) (2) 37 Marker Y-DNA test which tests the paternal line ONLY--$189 (US dollars)
The Combined Test for a man to consider if he wants to learn about BOTH his Assyrian father' line and his Assyrian mother' line: (1) 12 Marker Y-DNA (paternal line) test + mtDNA (maternal line DNA) -- $199 Women can order either of these maternal DNA tests: (1) mtDNA low resolution $129 (2) mtDNA Plus (High resolution) $189
It is necessary to add $2 shipping to whichever DNA test is ordered. If you have other questions, please contact me.
