Edmund Barker Family of WNC Home Page
Edmund Barker family that migrated from Wake County, N.C. between 1800-1815 to Macon County, N.C. The part of Macon County he lived in is now Jackson County, N.C. All of these counties were once part of Buncombe then Haywood County, N.C. George Grooms (G-G-G-G-Grandfather), Henry Grooms (Grooms Tune), Mitchell Caldwell who were murdered on Big Creek, in Haywood County NC, story is now the subject of a major motion picture. The movie is based loosely upon what happened to them during the American Civil War although their names have been changed. George Grooms was not a deserter from the CSA. He was a member of the US 11th Tn. Company K Calvary. He was on recruiting duty when he was captured along with his brother Henry and brother-in-law Mitchell Caldwell. They were executed by Teague and his scouts. The date he is listed as being deserted is after he had already been killed. George's wife collected a pension in later years for his service in the Federal army. I have his service record from the National Archives as proof.
