Origin: Colbert Origins & Meanings
COLBERT is said to be of French Huguenot origin, many Colbert families fled into exile many years ago and scattered themselves far and wide, indeed many settled in Ireland, where many a Colbert find they have historic links.
Colbert and Colibert (Colbeorht, Colobert), appears in the Domesday Book as the names of land holders in the time of Edward the Confessor and of undertenants at the time of the survey, an indication that the name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon and not from its Frankish cognate. In Ireland, the Colberts are found chiefly in Cork and Limerick
COLBERT as well as suggested to be Huguenot (French Protestant) is also found in south Ireland in the 1400s, long before the Huguenot era. It is possible, that these families came from either England,France or Scotland. The COLBERT surname is well known in south Munster. This name came to Ireland from England.
It occurs in the Domesday Book (1066) as COLBEORHT, meaning calm and bright. In Ireland, records as early as 1417 show that Thomas COLBERT was involved in a trespass case at Tipperary.
Griffith's Valuation found COLBERT families very numerous in Co. Waterford in 1850, with more than 55 householders recorded there.
