my great grandfather, John/Jonas Heinrich Thomsen came to this country in the early 1900's from Germany. His date of birth is January 24, 1857 in Witbeckfield, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and he died December 10, 1937 in Winside, NE. He is buried at Valley View Cemetery in rural, Persia, IA. He was married to Margarethe Hansen in 1879 in Germany. She died in Germany in 1901 and is buried there. They had 8 children: Christine, Alvina, Hans, Margaretha, Mathilde, Johanna, Peter and Emma. They all entered this country through Ellis Island and their destination was Fritz Thomsen (brother of John)in Persia, IA. family of Nico Bohm. He was born in Germany July 20, 1882 and was killed in a farming accident by Winside, Nebraska March 29, 1946. He had one sister, Lucie Bohm Nissen that lived in Minnesota. Barcom from Wisconsin and Canada, Meier later changed to Meyer from Wisconsin decended from John Meier in Germany, Johnston from the West Monroe, Oswego County New York area and the Sheboygan County Wisconsin area and Zettel from Wisconsin decended from Sebastian Zettel of Germany, the area of Bavaria. The name Barcom stems from the French name Berthiuame and is spelled by some branches as Barcomb, Barcome and several others. Zettel is sometimes spelled Zettl. Sebastian, Maria and their three children settled in Leroy, Wisconsin. Son Joseph later moved to West Bend, Washington, Wisconsin while daughter Maria, Teresa and son Xaver remained in the Leroy area . Joseph's son Albert settled in Baron, Wisconsin while the rest of his children remained in the West Bend area. Johan Meier settled in Washington County Wisconsin and his children settled primarily in the West Bend and Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. BALCH FAMILY from ENGLAND to CANADA
The family of James Balch (b.1845) came to Canada by ship in 1909 - that is, his wife Sarah and children came without him to the new world. James' son, also James (b. 1879) met and married his wife Alice Margaret Scattergood in Canada, and that is the beginning of the London, Ontario Balch family. James (b.1879) had a brother George who settled in Toronto and had family, some of whom now live in British Columbia, and a sister Mildred (Stone) settled in the Vancouver, BC area and also had family. One brother of James (b.1879), namely John William Balch, b. Sept. 5, 1881 in Caterham, Surrey, who married Queenie QUELCH, did not come to Canada. He became a butcher, and died before 1965. Nothing is known of this family except that there was a son Morris born about 1910 in England. This is our lost branch. James (b.1845) came from a large family,(Mary Anne, Patience, Jane, Emily, Linford George, Clara, and Arthur) all of whom were born in Caterham, Surrey. Linford Balch, a brother of James b.1853 has an extensive family still in England. The Balch family tended to be tailors, and later also butchers (introduced by the Bryant family). The oldest Balch we can safely claim heir to was James Balch b. 1815 and baptised in St. Martin's in the Field (London, England). He became a tailor in Downing Street and moved to Caterham in 1834. There he married Betsy Bryant, daughter of Henry Bryant and Patience Roffey (or Roffe). |
