Origin: Information that we have traces the origin of the Cloer name, with this particular spelling, to a minor French noble house in the middle ages. The name means 'nail wright' or 'maker of nails' and apparently this was the profession of the original family prior to the period of 'nobility'. (We have no information as to how the family rose to this position.) This spelling should not be confused with Clore, which is an entirely different family and is Scottish in origin having been spelled McClore before being 'Americanized.' Our information suggests that the Cloers came to this country during the French revolution to escape religious persecution.

Origin: The original surname was 'TEN BROECK', attributed to the first in this family to arrive in this country in 1626. His name was Wessel ten Broeck. After several generations, the name began to change; mostly in spelling, the pronounciation and sound is pretty much the same. 'Ten BROECK' means 'from the marsh/bog'. 'ten' in its truest form is 'tot den' which is a descriiptive prefix to a Dutch name. It is most commonly used in its abbreviated form, 'ten.' 'Nederland' (i.e. Holland / Netherlands) is a lowland area that was very marshy and full of bogs. The surname is a description of 'Wessel' who came from the marshy lowlands.

Origin: Crowell is derived from the Old English 'crawe', meaning 'crow's spring'. In fact, there is a Crowell,Oxfordshire,England which is near to the source of a spring located along an old Roman roadway. First families to America used the Crowe surname and later added the 'L'. Under heated debate is whether some Crowells are descended from the Oliver Cromwell and dropped the 'W'. In my opinion, Cromwell's son has proven to have lived, died, & buried in England.

Origin: In the American manner of signing documentation the X is used as a mark by someone who can not write their name. For Jacob Buhe (Booe) and others from Palatinate Germany, the mark was a distinctive scroll. When Jacob Buhe (Booe) signed his land transactions he signed his name. The English Parliament required that all documents be in English. In the official record book the name went from Buhe to Booe. When Christoph/Stophel Buhe, in 1767, Rowan County, North Carolina, was naturalized his name became Christoph Booe. The Booe name was used for the majority of the Buhe/Booe settlers.%0a%0aThe Booe family came from a fertile section from the upper Rhine in German called the Palatinate. The earliest known inhabitants of the Palatinate were highly civilized Celts. They settled in Transalpine Europe and the Iberian Peninsula during the sixth century before Christ.
