Origin: The Nuss is one of the spellings that has showed up on the documents we found for my great Grandfather George Peter Nusz(pronouce Noose) They were German Farmers that lost the free land given them by the Czar of Russia, when Germans were granted free land to farm in Prussia, My Grandparents came over from Duebrinski,Prussia(Russia) around 1850...on some of his legal papers with him not speaking good English and those not spelling German so good who were doing the legal papers transposed Nusz to Nuss,Noose,Nuze and Newz on alot of the papers, There are alot of Nusz around Hillsboro,Ks.

Origin: The origin of the name NORWOOD may be found in 12th century Kent, England, on the Isle of Sheppey at the mouth of the Thames River. It was Sir Stephen de Northwoode who first adopted the name, which described the richly wooded lands of his inherited estates on the Island. The name consists quite obviously of the two words North and Woode (sometimes spelt Wode), both Old English words which have the same meaning in Modern English. As early as the 14th century the <th> was dropped in some lines of the family, and practically universally by the 16th. There is some evidence both in Yorkshire, England, and in New England, that the name has been pronounced Norrod, without the <w>, but the pronunciation Nor-wood is most common.

Origin: Germanic, I've been told that possibly the Snapp name is an adaptation from 'Schnauppe' and that the name was given to makers of schnapps liquor in Germany, which is kind of funny because the descendants who arrived in the U.S. in 1733 (within 1 year accuracy) were religious zealots of some sort. The first house built and occupied by the original snapp emigrees still stands (I've been told by other snapps online) in Fairfax, VA. The original descendants were father and son. I think the house is brick, but am not sure. I hope this is helpful. There are Snapps in California and TN who know vastly more about Snapp family geneology.

Origin: The Nottingham name(pronounced not'ingum) comes from England and the first incidence of it's use is in the 11th century when William Peveril was called the Lord of Nottingham. The family inheriting the land, castle and perogatives took the name Nottingham. The first Earl of Nottingham was Charles Howard (1536-1624) a first cousin to Elizabeth I. He served as Lord High Admiral until 1619. According to some authorities, the first of the Nottingham line in America was Richard, from County Kent, England who settled in Virginia in 1646 in Northhampton County.

Origin: According to a keychain that I purchased in Ireland last February, it is: This is the anglicised version of the Gaelic Mag Fhiomnan meaning 'son of Fionnan'. This personal name derives from a diminutive form of 'fionn' meaning 'white or fair'. The name is most numerous in Co. Mayo as well as being borne by several early Irish saints. The motto for Gannon is 'With sword and valor'. Our branch of the family has been traced to Mohill, and there are still Gannons living there.

Origin: The surnames 'Node', 'Noad', 'Noade', 'Nodes' or 'Noades' are all thought to be derived from the Old English 'atten Ode', meaning 'by the / next to the burial mound'.
The oldest record of such a name refers to a man called 'Node' in the county of Herfordshire in the UK in the 13th Century. There is still a place called 'Node' in Hertfordshire where Tumuli (ancient burial mounds) can be found in a Wood.
