Origin: According to 'The Surnames of Ireland' by MacLysaght: MacDonagh--Mac Donnchadha (son of Donagh) A branch of the McDermots of Connacht where the name is very numerous. In Connemara the name is usually that of a branch of the O'Flahertys. The MacDonagh sept in Co.Cork were a branch of the MacCarthys; the name is now rare there and apparently many of these resumed the name MacCarthy.

Origin: Donnachaidh is one of the oldest Scottish clans, arriving in Scotland from Irish Picts anywhere from 40-90 AD. My particular surname, Donachy, I have been told is a 'hideout' name members of the clan took after Culloden in 1746. Being a Highland Clan, we were not on the winning side that day. Go to www.tartans.com for a good overview history. The clan is listed under the great hall. It's also known as Clan Robertson. I'm sure what I'm telling you, you already know about. If any info on the name Donachy could be shared, I'd greatly appreciate it. There's not too many of us :)

Origin: The originator of the name is said to be the father of Brian Boru,(Breoghan) the family traces the origin to the nephew of Brian Boru- born Brian Mac Kennedie, which was an 11th century High King of Ireland. Spelled Cinneide, (or many other spellings, depending on the language or dialect.) The name found earliest in Tipperary,Ireland around 940A.D. It is Gaelic, first known to have settled in Glenomra(Killokennedy) then later in Ormond. Check out the Heritage Corporation, the Hall of Names, the LDS Church, The Irish and or Scottish Clans. Origin: The spelling of Canedy is one of several varients, of the Irish Gaelic, 'Cinneidigh' or 'Cinneide' which are one and the same. My name is Cannaday, my gggrandfather used Canady.... ALL OF WHICH ARE THE SAME NAME... In English the name is spelled Kennedy still the same name... the Library of Congress recognizes 35 spellings with about 125 varients. Depending on the time frame researched, the family may be any number of nationalities. It started in Ireland. The name was changed to fit in with the language of the people, the branch of the family, in your line, lived with. The most accurate research I have discovered was done in Ireland and Scotland, by the Heritage Corp. through the different church parishes, CHECK OUT the LDS Family Centeres located in Ireland. You do not have to be LDS; I am not. Let me know what you find, I would be interested. The family motto (Irish )is:'The Strong Hand Uppermost' (Scottish) is: 'Consider the End'. There are (3) different Translated meanings for the name, 1.Helmeted-head, 2.Ugly-head, 3.Grim-headed. Some people think the description relates to the description of the character of the Chief of the Clan at the time-He was considered a mean person. Others feel that it relates to the coat of arms which isClayton Cannaday

Origin: In researching the French-Canadian side of my family, I have located the surname Bernabe. All of the ancestors I am researching were born in Quebec, Canada, in and near St. Thomas De Pierreville. For now, we can say that the name is of French origin, and that there was a concentration of at least a family branch of Bernabes in Quebec between 1830 and 1900.

Origin: Germanic, I've been told that possibly the Snapp name is an adaptation from 'Schnauppe' and that the name was given to makers of schnapps liquor in Germany, which is kind of funny because the descendants who arrived in the U.S. in 1733 (within 1 year accuracy) were religious zealots of some sort. The first house built and occupied by the original snapp emigrees still stands (I've been told by other snapps online) in Fairfax, VA. The original descendants were father and son. I think the house is brick, but am not sure. I hope this is helpful. There are Snapps in California and TN who know vastly more about Snapp family geneology.

Origin: The VanArsdol surname is a spelling variation of VanHaesdale. Simon Janz VanHaesdale was the first immigrant to the United States to use this surname. Simon was born in what is now East Flanders Belgium and died in Kings County NY. The name is Dutch, and even though the Dutch did not use surnames in their native lands, when they came to the U.S., the British insisted the immigrants have a surname; so many of them adopted the name of the village in their home land as a surname, hence, 'Van' meaning 'from'.

Origin: After nearly a century of family research, the origin of the Yancey family and the Yancey name itself, for the most part, still lie in obscurity. The history of the Yancey family has been traced back to the early 1700's to the colony of Virginia where branches of the family were living in the counties of New Kent, Hanover, Louisa, Spotsylvania and Culpeper. Where did these families come from? When and how did they immigrate to America? How did the name itself originate? These are questions that have eluded Yancey researchers for decades, most of the answers to which still lie undiscovered. What follows is not the discussion of any recent major discovery concerning the origin of the family, but a general summary of the various theories and traditions concerning the history of the family as well as some rather general information concerning life in Virginia during the 17th century. This is given to help the reader develop some general insight as to who our early Yancey ancestors were, and what life may have been like for them in the early Virginia Colony.

Origin: There are Irish Foxes and Cambro-Norman Foxes in Ireland. The origins of the Irish Fox name are commonly believed to originate with 11th century Tadhg 'The Fox' O'Catharnaigh, chief of Teathbha (or Teffia), who was apparently clever 'like a fox' in battle as well as in acquiring land. Several Irish annals point to a different story - that in the year 1024 'the men of Teathbha' killed Ireland's chief poet/historian of that era - and that they in turn were killed and left unburied, afterwards acquiring a foul odor. Another version has the killer or killers remaining alive after their evil deed, but forever after carried a foul odor with them (divine retribution). The odor was similar to that of a fox, which has a scent similar to that of a skunk.%0a%0aThis unfortunate story does not carry any more credibility than the first story simply because, in a time period when people might easily change their names to suit their purposes, it is hard to believe subsequent generations would CHOOSE to perpetuate a surname which had socially negative connotations.%0a%0aFor more on the Fox name and Fox history, as well as background to the Cambro-Norman Foxes, see Fox Clan website at the link directly above.
