It is at this time do we see the marriage licenses that record the beginnings of this surname. The name was also used in conjunction with the word pikeys. Pikeys is a term used for Gypsies at that time in English history. The name was then popularized in London in the early 18th century as a surname. The Monk surname can be found in UK parish and apprenticeship records back to the late 16th century at least (although variant spellings ? Monke, etc ? were common) and was not confined to London even at that date (if ever). The two explanations of the origins of the surname I have heard are that the name was either given to the offspring of members of religious orders (less strange than it sounds ? the monks of many centuries ago were not invariably expected to remain unmarried or take an oath of chastity) OR it was given ironically, as a nickname, to those whose behaviour was the opposite of monk-like!
