Origin of Monk, Meaning of Monk
Origin: The name monk derives from the common word used in late 17th century England for those that begged on the streets. The name was also used in conjunction with the word pikeys. Pikeys is a term used for Gypsies at that time in English history. The name was then popularized in London in the early 18th century as a surname.

Origin of Monk, Meaning of Monk
Origin: Both of the explanations of the Monk surname given by other submitters are verifiably dubious! The Monk surname can be found in UK parish and apprenticeship records back to the late 16th century at least (although variant spellings ? Monke, etc ? were common) and was not confined to London even at that date (if ever). The two explanations of the origins of the surname I have heard are that the name was either given to the offspring of members of religious orders (less strange than it sounds ? the monks of many centuries ago were not invariably expected to remain unmarried or take an oath of chastity) OR it was given ironically, as a nickname, to those whose behaviour was the opposite of monk-like!
